7mm-08 Vs. 7mm Rem Mag

Any of you have both? I have been wondering what the actual difference in performance is. I have noticed that with max loads the muzzle velocity is only a couple hundred FPS higher from the 7mm Rem mag yet it uses much more powder. Anyone have any insight?

With a 139 grain Hornady the 7/08 will run at 2400 FPS with 42.4 grains of Win 760..
The 7mm Rem Mag will run 3000 FPS with 60.5 grains of the same powder, so the extra 18.1 grains of Win 760 gives 600 more FPS in the 7mm Rem Mag... and that is a lot of difference in hitting power..
Not that it's always needed, but it's nice to have if you do need it...
My 7saum will shoot the 139's as fast as the 7 mm Rem Mag with a tiny bit less powder...

I can get 2700fps with a 140 gr. acubond out of a 20 in. barrel with varget. You should be able to reach 2800-2900 fps out of a 24 in barrel. I've killed close to 40 deer with this cartridge. Inside 400 yrd's it works as well as anything.

There was a time where bigger, faster was the name of the game. If a case didn't have a belt or say magnum, it was a whimpy case your grandpa used.

If you look at ALL the standard action magnums, you will find that they are at most 250fps faster then the closest standard case. BUT that extra speed sold alot of rifles - flatter trajectory, harder hitting, increase hair growth, you name it.

Animals shot in the boiler room with a 30-30 didn't care at the end of the 18th century. They certainly don't care today when hit up to 800fps faster.

For walkabout hunting at regular engagment distances, the 7-08 will kill just as effectively, make less noise and no bruises. Just pick the bullet weight and design to suit your hunting style.

My last hunting rifle was a 7RM BECAUSE it was set up to engage game at extended distances. I pushed 162gr Amax at a very fast clip and could engage game as far as my Leica 800 could range.

here the extra speed and energy matters.

A comparison of the 7mm's I have:

7BR with a 15" barrel, factory 140's run 2200 or so fps.
,Not a direct comparison, but my hunting load is 31gr of VV-133 with the 120's at 2500)

7-08 with a 23 1/4" barrel runs 49 gr. H-414 with moly plated 140 Accubonds just a touch over 2900 fps.

7mm SAUM with a 24" barrel runs 68gr. H-4831sc with moly plated 140 Accubonds right at 3200fps.

7mm Rem Mag with a 24" barrel runs 73gr R-22 with moly plated 140 Partitions at 3300fps.

Top dog in my stable is a 7 STW with a 28" barrel running 87gr of Retumbo with moly plated 150gr Swift Scirrocos at an average of 3428fps.

Pick your poison, but, you can't have efficiency and high performance in the same package.
