7MM-08 Load Information Request

I recently purchased a 7mm-08 barrel from "Cliffe" for a switch barrel for my Savage .223

I am interested in getting some input as to what your opinions are in getting a good load worked up. Will be using this gun for deer and varmint hunting primarily.

I am also interested in trying to find a set of dies for this as well.

Thanks for the assistance and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

hello,I would use the 140 grain bullets,me the Noslers worked good for me when I had a 7m/08.varget,4831 4064,REloader15 worked good also.CCI 200 primers.BUT my best load was 150grain core-lokt with 37.5 grains of reloader15 with a 300 CCI primer seated just off the lands.hope this helps.

Lee dies is what I used.

I don't have a 7mm-08 but some of the people that I have talked to that use it say the 120 Nosler ballistic tip is great for WT deer. I has the same jacket thickness as the 140 but just shortened down to get the 120 weight. This information came from the Nosler people on their web site.

I can vouch for the Nos 120 BT's effectiveness on whitetail. I use H380 just because I'm too lazy to weigh charges. Varget works very well also. The latest Nosler manual recommends IMR 4350 for best accuracy.

For pure accuracy try the Sierra 168 Matchking over about 40 Grains of IMR 4064. You'll need a 8 twist for this one.

Let me answer from 2 angles:
Accuracy: My custom mauser w/ 22" bbl. has the same accuracy with: AA2460, AA2520, BLC2, XMR435,accurate) and Varget with the SGD 140 or the Horn. 139gr. Sprire pt or SST.

Velocity: 44.xgr of Varget beat each of the above powders by 100fps and accuracy was just as good if not better.

I want to try RL17 some day to see what happens.

I have a 7-08 in an Encore and have been working up loads. The 140 gr. Accubond really shoots well with 39 gr of Varget.
I haven't put it over the chronograph yet but it shoots under 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards.
I shot 2 whitetail in Wisconsin this year and it performed really well. Nice little hole going in and liquified lungs with a 1 inch hole on the exit. They both ran about 20 yards with a huge blood trail and then tipped over.
I shot a hog in California with a 139 hornady interbond. Very good performance also. Shot him in the forehead and exited at the base of the neck. He didn't go far.
I haven't done my final load work up but the 140 gr. Accubonds seem to really perform in this rifle.

I built a Savage sporter using a 110 action and factory 22' barrel in 7mm/08. My best load to date is 42.5 grains of Varget pushing a Nosler 120 grain BT seated .012' OTL. My velocity is 2957 fps with an ES of 22. Five shot group measured .632'. The action is glass bedded in a walnut stock I ordered from Brownells. The barrel is fully floated. I'm using an EGW picatinney base with Weaver 4X4 rings to mount a Mueller 4.5X14X40 APV.
