7mm-08 in .308Win gun

I have a .308 and planning to purchase 7mm-08.
It will be a few users for these rifles. And a safety is a bit concern: if some one by mistake loads 7mm-08 in .308Win gun will it fire? Will firing pin reach the primer? If so I'd be better with a different caliber I guess?

I have a 7-08 and a .243. My son and I were both shooting in a varmint shoot and in the mass confusion of first relay getting off the bench and second relay getting on the bench we grabbed the .243 ammo and fired it in the 7-08. It fired, did not hit anything and ruined some expensive turned Lapua brass!

Long story short ALL my ammo boxes have labels on the outside in BIG BOLD LETTERS what the ammo is instead of just the chart I still keep on the inside.

My bigger concern would be trying to load the 308 in the 7-08 - that sounds explosive.

I believe the 243, 7-08, 308, 358 all use the same go gauge.

The 7-08 in a 308 chamber will just blow the brass to 308 dimensions and the bullet will 'rattle' down the bore. No harm, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Can't imagine a 308 cal. bullet fitting in a 284 hole....

Don't know the answer to the firing pin question, but years ago during a mindless moment, read young and really stupid) I reached for a 7mm-08 and unintentionally slipped it into a 280 Remington. Wow, I could tell by the noise something was wrong, but the bolt lifted quite easily. The bullet managed to make it all the way down the spout but the extracted 7-08 case had no shoulder and was split the length of the newly shaped mouth. The firing pin sure reached the primer that time.

My guess is there was some gas escaping in front of the bullet during all that free bore. Happy to say both the shooter and the rifle escaped without injury or damage but I no longer have a 7-08. I just can't imagine if it was a 308 in the 280 chamber.

I agree with alf --- the 7mm bullet in a 30 bore may rattle around a bit but without catastrophic consequence.
