7mm-06 - Anyone Have One?

Have an interesting firearm built on a 1917 Eddystone action by one Fred D. Hays in Altadena, California who knows when. Gorgeous gun, beautifully blued, finished and stocked with a bedded action. Has a 26" medium taper barrel marked "Rock" slightly offset from the caliber marking.

Picked up a set of RCBS dies some years ago - they were a catalog stock item. Have only run 50 rounds through the gun and haven't been serious about load development, but that's coming. I put a file notch in the base of the sized cases so I don't get mixed up with my 30-06 brass.

Anyone still shoot these? I'm going to gear up to do some long range tests against my 7-08's and see if I can do cheap long-range shooting (cheap as in the rifles are bought and paid for a long time ago).

Would be interested in exchanging information on the performance of this round.

Look for 280AI loads and start about 15% lower and see how that goes.
Should be able to find some sweet spot in there, just as any load development, work up cautiously till you find a load that works in your gun.
Is this a straight 7-06 with the 32* shoulder or an early version of the 280AI?
The first adapters of the round used the same shoulder angle, same body taper... Then along came PO Ackley.

Ain’t that a 280?

Performance wise, yes. However, they're not identical as Remington moved the 280's shoulder forward by 20 or 30 thou' to stop 280s chambering in a 270 Win rifle.

Therefore, to convert 30-06 brass into 280, a false shoulder has to be created in the lower neck and the case then fireformed in the 280 chamber. If the OP also owns a 270 Win rifle, or it ends up in the hands of one such, they have to be very careful never to mix the two cartridges (7-06 + 270) up.

Look for 280AI loads and start about 15% lower and see how that goes.

Why 280AI? The 7mm-06 and 280 Rem case capacities are so close to that standard 280 Rem loads data is not only usable, but safer.

Maybe not, the early 7-06's were exactly that, same shoulder and body taper...
Just necked down to 7mm/.284... Then along came PO Ackley = 280AI
That's all it is. I've just been using 30-06 necked to 7mm. Guess reaming the chamber to an AI would be a project to keep in mind.....

The 7x64 Brenneke came to mind first when I thought of similar cartridges.
The 30-06 is the 63mm in length so I was thinking start with lower end charges for the 7x64 and/or 280 Remington. Although the 7x64 has a max of just over 61,000 PSI I don't think I would go there without knowing the Eddystone could hold it.
