788 Rem Left Hand

I came across a used Remington 788 6 MM Left Hand for sale at a local gun shop. Factory standard, nothing fancy, in fair condition. Asking price $ 599.00. I'm thinking that a little high. I'd want it for the action. Your thoughts !

I have fond memories of a LH 788 that was my first CF rifle. That said, stick with a 722 or 700. I'm not saying that they are no good, just that you have very limited trigger and stock options. Just one opinion...

Last year found about a half-dozen left-hand Remington 788 rifles in 308 and 6mm. Was surprised at how high the prices were, but they sold at those high prices so guess there is a collector interest in them.

For a shooter, the left-hand 700 rifles/actions can be found cheaper.

On a side note...

I'm a 788 looney. My buddy,who's a leftie) is fellow 788 fan. He built a heavy 6XC on a left hand 788 action for prairie dog shooting. Not only does the gun shoot great, but the added bonus is the port is on the right hand side, which is great for shooting on a bench.

But think some folks from the Cast Bullet Association liked to build competition rifles on the 788 due to its fast lock time.

For those who have never seen one, LH 788s are left bolt right port, had a shorter lock time than a 700. Were a lot stiffer, and had more bedding area. The problem is that they are trigger limited.

l had a Rem. 788 in the early 70s in 243 l really like it, it was a good shooter but like it was said the trigger needed work, l did some work on the trigger, l added two set screws one for overtravel and the other for sear's engagement worked out good creep gone and so was the overtravel clean let off.

For those that might want to do the Mod.
