783 Screw Size

I have to skim bed a Remington 783 into a Boyds stock. What size screw/thread count should I get to use for guides when I strap the action in?

Bear with me, it's the first I've ever done.

Thanks

1/4-32 I believe- why they couldn’t use 28 tpi like a 700 is beyond me

Thanks. I'll give that a try. The rifle is at work and I am at home (70 mile round trip). I forgot to bring one of the action screws home for the last two weeks. I'm ready to get this thing done.

Can you even get a 1/4-32? Ive never seen that thread in a store. May have to either make a stud on a lathe, put the bolts in it then remove them after an hour or so of curing. Thats the route id take. Drill out the pillar holes during clean up

Yep, you are right. None to be found in my small town. The clerk was even smart enough to say "32 TPI? Nope, we don't have that."
I am going to take the route of removing the screws after letting it set awhile.

Hard to find 1/4-32 bolts at the hardware for sure. One of the hardwares around here did have 1/4-32 threaded rod and nuts though. Also that is a size Winchester has used on their guard screws so you can prob find stock making screws in that size meant for Winchester’s. I got some blank 1/4 bolts and am making my own with a die.

Just passing this along. I don't know what you plan to use for bedding material, I use Acra-Glass, but after it has sat/set for a couple of hours I turn the screws a couple turns out and then back in to be sure action screws are not glued in. You said this is your first time and a stuck barreled action in a stock is a frightful, heart stopping moment. Remember how hard it is to find those screws, you don't want to tear 'em up getting them out.

You are absolutely right. I am not a good hobbyist to begin with, more of a beat it with a big hammer guy. So, I am a little apprehensive. But, it's a $349 dollar rifle and an $80 ebay/Boyds stock. So if something does go wrong, it won't be like it's a big deal. I'll be able to laugh and make other's laugh when I tell the story. The phrase that defines me - all my life I thought I was smart.

So, I am going to tape the barrel to center it in the stock and I am going to use the original screws to make sure the action is aligned when I initially put it in the stock. I will turn them after an hour and I will probably just take them out after a couple of hours. I will use surgical tubing to hold the action in the stock until the cure is over. Needless to say it will all be liberally coated with a release agent of some kind.

I really appreciate your gusto. I read on this forum about using the Hornady case lube spray and it works great. You don't miss any spots with this stuff. Spray the screws down before inserting. Remember that the action screw holes will be filled with bedding compound and take Dusty's suggestion and drill out the pillar holes later. We're pulling for you.
