77gr and H4895

What kind of success are you guys having with this combo in 223 using Lale City brass? I have never worked with H4895 before but I am very familiar with Varget.

I am thinking of trying 23gr at mag length to start, collect velocity and go from there.

Can anyone comment on the temp stability of H4895, also is it any cleaner than Varget?

I have never used H4895. But there's a bunch of competitors in cross the course who swear by it for accuracy and love it for 77 SMKs.
They say almost anything is cleaner than Varget.

But I always ran 23.4 behind a 77 or 80.
77 mag length WILL make 600 yards, some us have shot all the way back with SMK77. Just may need a better wind call at 600.

It s a wonderful power, Start at 23.0 in your set up and work up.

Right below here in similar threads is some good information on H4895 and 77smk. I run my .223 ftr rifle with 80 eldm Hornaday for 600 yds with also a longer throat. I believe it's a little dirtier than some other powders but more than Varget im no sure seeing how I had only burned maybe an 8lb. jug before it became hard to get. If you're running a gas gun I wouldn't let that stop me from using it.

Cleaner than Varget for sure. Temp stable in my experience too.

22.8 gr of AR Comp gets me in the 2750 neighborhood with my 18" gasser. So it would seem that H4895 is relatively close to AR Comp in burn rate? Being one of Hodgedon's extreme powders is it pretty temp and or lot stable as well?

That's a pretty wide range of powder charge. I am using a 18" wylde white oak SPR barrel. I am interested in trying some Lapua bullets, have yet to try any. Also need to try some of the Berger 73-77gr stuff. Run 85.5s in my bolt gun with great success.

H4895 is a forgiving powder. You may not get all the velocity you see from AR comp but usually tighter on the target. Works well with 69’s too.

H4895 is an absolute fantastic powder for this combo. Personally, I feel it is even a better choice than Varget.

It was about 2755. Here is a 300 yard target using that load on a hot July day.

LC, but I run .2 less in Lapua or Ruag brass. Has shot many a clean target with H4895.
