75 grain Amax for an ar15 ?

Has anyone loaded their ar15 with the 75 grain amax with success . Iam looking to make a harder hitting pig plinker , and I have stocks of h380 I need to burn up before I make transition to a newer powder ?

The 75 AMAX is too long to be mag fed. If you are OK with single-loading, it will work just fine. If you want to feed from the mag, go with the Hornady 75 BTHP or the 77 SMK. Both of those can be loaded to mag length with no issues.

Thankyall for the fast replys, I forgot to ask about makeing them mag length and if it would build to much pressure

SIE 77's, Berger 73 LTB (BT) are your best bets for that.. i can't find any current load data for H380 and the .223.. though the powder burn chart from Hodgdon shows H380 just a tad faster than VVN540. Which if i remember correctly, the AMU load for the Berger 80 was a stiff load of N540 powder. But with a mag length tolerant bullet, your capacity in the case is simply reduced to a inefficient volume for such a powder.. so i am not so sure that the H380 would work very well.. Just IMHO.

I have best luck with Berger 77OTM at mag length.

To date the top 3 pig loads for me are: 63gr. Sierra Semi- Spitzer, 65gr. Sierra Game King, and 70 Speer Round Nose Varminter. These 3, and or any combination there of, are hard to beat for hogs.

They're common on the 600 yard line in service rifle, but loaded long as stated. I might be willing to try them out if you want to get rid of them...

Well I really do thank y'all ,this has been a big help plus new loads I get to venture to , just gotta bite the bullet and sit on more powder and just convert lmao, and as far as needing these rounds I don't really have a use for them now , I just won tell the wife since she bought them for me lol

No and yes, Will not work seated for mag length and pressure will build fast if you try.
This is exactly correct. Basically by seating the AMAX deep, you will reduce the case volume, which will increase chamber pressure and that will give you high pressure even with low charges. Basically the opposite you want to do.

You are not exactly the first person to buy these 175 gr AMAX and finding this out....

The Hornady 75 HPBT is one bad little bullet and will fit in an AR mag.

The new 73 Hornady looks like it will be a good one too.

I've shot plenty of 75 A-Max out of an AR, all the way to 1000 yards. As explained above, it will not fit in a magazine if properly seated. I used 25.5gr of Varget for the trip to 1000 yards in a 24 inch barrel. It was just barely sonic and when it got cold in south Texas, it went subsonic but stayed stable.

For pig hunting, my most favoritest bestest bullet in a maglength AR is the Swift Sirocco II 75gr. I brought down a 300lb hog at full gallop with one of them. Awesome bullet, perfect mushroom at 80 yards. Also with Varget.

I've shot several with the 77gr Nosler CC BTHP, even a couple with the 80gr Nosler CC BTHP loaded singly. No issues, DRT with both bullets.

Nosler 77 CC's loaded to 2.240 (mag length) , 24 gr of RL-15 shoots outstanding in most service rifle match stainless barrels. This is generally my 200/300 yd High Power load. Sometimes I will shoot this load at 600 if the wind is dead calm.

Nosler 80 CC's have to be SLED loaded long, not sure what my Ogive measurement is for my 20" WOA barrel, but i'm at 24.5 gr of Varget and it's a stout load that is tough on my brass but it shoots outstanding at 600 yds in my rifle.

I'm sure the 80grainers do a great job on pigs, but when you have a sounder running by at full tilt, single loading an AR is a handicap.

Loving this forum guys the info is awesome , Iam making a trip to the store today I think my fingers are already twitching

I load them mag length with a gentle bolt gun load (before I throated it, but that's another story) over H-322.
