75 amax and 1-9 twist

What's true?
I read that it works, then I read it won't work.....
Will a 223 Rem with a 20 inch barrel 1-9 twist stabilize the
75 Amax bullet?
Thanks David

Not trying to be Vague but, some barrels will shoot them and some won't. I have 2, 20in 1 in 9s. 1 shoots them well and another from the same mfg. does not. You just have to try them to find out.

For what it's worth I shoot them in a factory 1-9 twist Savage barrel. Shoots verry well. As stated, some barrels shoot them and some won't. I tried to my best to measure the twist of my barrel and it came out a bit faster than 1-9

26" barrel and I can get over 3000 FPS, but in the low to mid 2900's it works the best

I was thinking about using it in the Remington LTR rifle.
It has a 20 inch barrel and should have a real 1-9 twist.
That's what I've been told on another forum.
Longest distance shooting would be 400m and I want a compact rifle to take in the field if needed so the LTR with the 75 amax would be a great duo if it works.

My Savage 12BVSS in 223 shoots them extremely well with it's 1/9 twist. Give them a try, only way to know.

Good shooting.

The A-max is marginal in a 1:9, and really likes a 1:7 for best long range performance. If it works at all, it may be OK in warm weather and bad on a cold day. For good performance from a 1:9, your best bet is the Hornady 75 gr BTHP Match. I use them in NRA Highpower competition at 200 and 300 yards, and they've always been sub-MOA in every barrel with every load I've tried.

I'll have to check that one out.
Does it have a BC comparable to the 75 Amax?
I was thinking that the extra velocity you can get with a bolt action would be enough to stabilize the Amax 75 although the 20 inch barrel isn't the best option.
David

The BTHP has a BC of .395 vs. .435 for the A-Max. Another possibility woud be the Sierra 80 gr with a BC of .42; however, it really needs a 1:7.7 or faster twist. Higher velocity will help a bit, but not enough to make the A-Max or 80 gr SMK reliable. I think the 75 gr BTHP is your best bet with a 1:9 twist. You can get 2800 fps with a variety of loads, and 2900 fps if you push a bit past SAAMI maximum. The 80 gr SMK would be at least 100 fps slower so the performance would be a wash. I'd recommend Vihta vuori N-540 to get the maximum velocity from a 20" barrel, and Reloder-15 would be a close second. Both powders like WSR primers in my testing.

My Remington PSS in 223 caliber has a 1 in 9 twist barrel - shoots Hornady 75 BTHP very well - won't shoot the 75 grain Amax worth a hoot! As mentioned earlier can vary significantly in factory barrels with the same model of rifle.

The Remington LTR is going to cost me $2270,cheapest price I found in Belgium) so I want to know for sure I can shoot some good bullets in it.
I don't want to invest that much money and then find out I have to shoot wind sensitive bullets.
The rifle is going to be used at the 100 till 400 meters ranges and I want a low recoil, short handy rifle to do this.

DaveB if you really want the Rem- go for it
but you are much closer to Tikka and their super varmint comes standard with a 1:8 twist that will stabalise the 75 A-max
and you can get the super varmint in either a 20 or 23 3/4 inch barrel

That's expensive! My factory .223 pss is 1-9" twist announced, I have not measured it, but shoots the 75gr. a-max and 80 sierra perfectly with a lot of RL-15! I tried 80gr. a-max and they went bad, then shot some 80gr. noslers just fine ?!

I am currently building a 22-250 to shoot the 75's. I ordered a new Krieger barrel. Krieger recommemded a 1 in 8 twist for the 75's. Tom.

Hornady recommends a 1-8" twist for the 75 gr. A-Max bullet. It's written right on the end of the box.

That said, many shooters that are shooting 1-9" twist barrels claim that these bullets work in their barrels. I measured the twist in a friends Savage .223 LRPV that was supposed to be 1-9", but in reality measured 1-8.25". It shot the 75gr. Amax bullet very well. Another rifle that measured a true 1-9" didn't do so good with the 75gr. A-Max's.

I believe that these bullets probably won't work if your barrel really measures 1-9". Button rifled barrels are notorious for not measuring what the manufacturer claims.

I wouldn't gamble on the an LTR with a 1-9" twist being able to shoot the 75gr. A-Max. It's going to be a crapshoot.

I have a 700P and it shoots the 75gn A-max and the 77gn SMKs just as well as the 69gn SMKs. Be aware though that to load the 223 to fit your internal mag on a LTR or the external mag on a Tikka T3 you should use the Hornady 75gn BTHP Match and not the A-max as they are to long to seat to the correct OAL of 2.26". If you load the SMKs use the 77gn and not the 80gns. If you use the 80gn SMKs OAL should be 2.55" and they can be loaded singularly only.
