74 gr bergers in a 14 twist

Has anyone shot the 74 grain bergers in a 6mm ppc with a 14 twist. I want to try these in a 6mm BR and also use them as fireforming loads for a 6mm PPC. Will these stabilize in the 6mm PPC or will I just be fireforming the cases?

Hello Earl,

You will most likely not like the results of shooting this bullet on the 14" twist in your 6mmBR. I have not shot this bullet on this twist, but I watched some folks try it, and the groups opened up to around 6" at 100 yards. If you are just going to use them for fire forming, they would be okay for this. The information that I have from the folks at Berger indicates that you would need a 13" twist to do these bullets justice in the 6mmBR.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

What Bob said.

Depending on the elevation where you live and/or shoot, and the yardage you will be shooting, I would go a step further and use a 12 twist for any bullets between 70 and 85 grains. Better safe than sorry is my motto. JMHO

Hi Earl...they should do just fine....I shoot em in my BR and even the Berger 80's with good results...,,my bbl is 14 twist also!!)).......let us know how well they work for uuu.....Roger

I had a Border barrelled 6ppc with a 14 twist and the accuracy with the 74 bergers was superb and equalled the 68,s and 70,s no problem.I would imagine same accuracy with a 14 twist 6br especially with the addded velocity to help.JUST to make sure though and for heads of this weight its getting on the edge of being able to stabalise so my 6ppc and 6br are barrelled with 12 twisters and opens up the window even more.Have seen 87g vmax stabalise in my 6ppc but probably only just!Benchresters all seem to use the 14 twist or thereabouts and suspect there is a reason for this and that this twist provides better potential for shooting the 60-68 match heads and from my own experiments with my rifles [12 twist]I find they like the heavier heads ie 74-80g and grouping is very very tight and consistent with these.cheers onehole
