721 Remington Action

Does anyone have an opinion on using a 721 Long Action as a builder for a single shot Prairie Dog rifle? Is it as good as a later 700 for this purpose, will it accept a standard 700 stock and a Jewell trigger?

Thanks, Pablo

Pablo,

It is as good as any 700 if not better in my opinion. The rear tang is a little wider but that is about it if I remember correctly. Almost forgot, the rear tang does not have a cut for the safety lever clearance. Very easy to correct. Great action for a build. Should fit a 700 stock with very little work. Hope this helps. ;D

Paul

I'm in the process of finishing a 721 with a single shot follower. 6mm AI 1-8 twist. I fitted a standard 700 trigger. For safety clearance, I heated the lever and reshaped it to clear the side of the receiver. The only other difference that I am aware of aside from the bolt handle is the extractor. I've been told that the OEM extractors aren't cheap to replace. If mine ever craps out, I'll have a Sako style put in it. One more thing...the bolt stop needs to be thinned about 50% where the rear trigger pin goes through for the spring to fit properly. I can email pictures if you need a better description....long evening spent with Jim Beam and old service pals!

It'll drop right into a stock made for a 700. The rear tang takes some grinding to blend the lines of the action to the stock in that area, like boltfluter said in his post. It took me about 3/4 hr. to do this with a die grinder and course , med., then fine 2"-3" sanding discs, then polishing on the buffer. I mill the slot for the safety lever, it matches the safety cut in the stock made for the 700 that way. The bolt release spring is a different setup than the 700. Uses a compressed coil at the rear instead of the wound wire "leaf" like the 700 does. A Jewell trigger will pin right on. As for "better or worse",,,,, I've seen new 700's that take a lot to straighten out and old 700's that take a lot to straighten out. That's just the way it is with 'production made' actions,,,,, or production made anything, for that matter. JMO
