700 VLS question

I am thinkig a bout trading my ar project for a Remington Model 700. The guy says it was a vls, but he changed the stock to a H&S with black and grey webbing. It includes a set of Leupold scope mounts and a 12X60-56 Tasco custom scope. What would the approximate value of this be? It is Stainless and a 22-250.

The scope New ran about $350-400 I think,They have'nt been made in a few years). The gun, well how many rounds down the tube ? A 22-250 should have the throat looked at closely for erosion. That will be a big factor in the price of the rifle itself.

I dont believe the VLS came in stainless,Varmint Laminate Stock), the stainless models were known as the VSSF,Varmint Stainless Synthetic Fluted) and came with the H&S stock.

Judging by how you explained it, it just doesent sound right to me..

Prior to the change in the Administration, I would typically see the VSSF on the used racks for 600-650$, now there around 750$.

Lew Horten had a run of 250 VLS's Varmint Laminated Stainless's made up in 223,22-250,243. 250 made for each caliber I had 1 in 22-250 and 223 they came out about 5-6 years ago.The stocks were the non-beaver tail fore end with a black fore end tip and grip cap design with the matte stainless barreled varmint action 26 in barrel. If I remember correctly I paid $550-570 each new. the boxes said Lew Horten Special but there was no ID on the rifles themselves.

Yea, your right. I forgot about the special runs that are out there that most of us are not aware of unless you have one. Something to consider.

I have one of those odd ball runs too, a 7mm STW in a VLS configuration.

But if that trade makes you happy, go for it...

More than likely it was one of the newer stainless ones with the laminated thumbhole stock.

All that matters is how the gun is set up now. Laminated stocks look good but I prefer the H-S. Depending on how it's been treated, at 6-700rds that barrel could still have plenty of life but it isn't new or anywhere near-new. Check the throat for wear.

That Tasco Custom Shop is an ok scope but not great. There was much better. Mine was an 8-40x56 with a large wheel on the side focus knob. Getting it sharply focused was very touchy. Part of that was the narrow adjustment range of that side focus and I'm sure part of it was optics. Backed off to 32x and compared to a Burris Signature 8-32x44 at full 32x, the Burris was noticeably sharper.....little details at 350yds were much easier to see. The Burris is just a lot better scope. If he thinks that scope is something extra special, have him keep it and knock a bunch off the price. Have him keep the Leupold rings also and put some Burris Signatures on there. If it's strictly a package deal, don't allow any more than about $150-175 for the scope.

Get the serial number of the rifle and call Remington. They can tell you what it was when it left the factory.

Is the stainless barrel marked with Remington, Ilion, NY and the safety warnings? If so, then it's their barrel for sure.

If it's the varmint contour, i.e. a 5.5 contour as I think it was also known, then it will be 0.820' at the muzzle.

Regardless, figure the H-S Precision stock is worth $200. The barreled action is worth, roughly, $450.

Allow $200 for the scope, which is what you could probably sell it for if it's in good shape), and you're looking at $850 for the works.
