700 VLS in 6mm Rem

Just purchased a remingotn 700 vls in a 6mm. I am going to use the gun for groundhogs and also to shoot some 1 3 and 5 hundred groundhog rifle matches. Trying to decide on a good bullet to use. Was considering an 87 gr v-max,bc .400) or the 90 gr scenars,bc .420). Any one have any opinions or prefereneces? Or maybe something else? taking all considerations. Was thinking winchester brass, Federal Gm210M and possibly IMR 4350 or IMR 4895. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The 6mm Rem works real well on rockchucks/woodchucks and pretty much any other varmint that needs to be shot.

Mine has performed best at modest ranges with the 75 gr Sierra HP. The 85 gr HPBT Sierra also shoots real well, and performs better at longer ranges, but isn't as explosive. I've also used the little 55 and 60 grain bullets, but they just haven't been as accurate from my rifle as the heavier pills.

I've never used either of the bullets you're thinking of, but I imagine they have excellent potential.

Going for deer, my favorite is the 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip - and it's both accurate and effective.

IMR 4350 works well, Reloader 22 is another good choice for the 6mm Remington. Winchester brass and the Federal 210m work well and are my standard choices.

Regards, Guy

The Rem 6mm has been my primary "go to " deer rifle since the 60's. Here in VA. we have a very generous deer season. So 5 to 8 deer a yr. is not out of line for a season.

I have used many different brands of bullets, but have settled on the Barnes 85 gr. X's. Bang Flop.

For varmints, I have settled on the Hornady 75 gr. V-Max.

I use both R-19, & H-4831 with the above bullets. Very good accuracy.

I would use the V-max or the Nosler BT's for the varmints and i would use the Berger VLD's for the groundhog matches .

i as well have the 700 VLS in 6 mm Rem! I love it my load I shoot at most everything is the 95 gr. Berger's with IMR 4064 or Ram Shot Hunter! I like 40.0 gr with Remington cases and CCI 200 primers with the Berger's touching the lands I am getting right around 2854 FPS with that load! the gun also like the 100 gr SP in Sierra and i use IMR 4064! I found with the Remington case they were more consistent on the weight and the neck thickness then the Winchester brass! My rifle is stock and i plan on shooting the gun until the next summer and then going through it and get it ready for the bench!

Anyone familiar with using RL 22 or Norma MRP powder with the 6mm Remington? Am thinking that I will use the Sierra's new 95gr Matchking.

I have a 6mm Rem 700 and have shot it with just about everything out there. I Like Nosler for critters and Sierra Gamekings for Deer. My rifle seems to like 4064 and RL22. Just got some RamShot and haven't worked up loads yet, maybe this early spring and summer.

I have a question concerning the amount of bullet that remains in the case once seated. I measured the OAL of my 6mm. To reach the lands I have to seat the bullet out a good distance, which doesnt leave too much of the bullet in the case. any comments appreciated. Is this ok?
thanks

thats a good thing  on the length.more room for "rl22" or "mrp" i would be happy if i can't pull them out by hand for hunting.

which bullet does not seat deep enough? hard to believe it is the 95SMK?

should i start worring that you're going to beat me at the G.H. matches yet?

brad, i have lydia to handle that competition! :thumb: you're outa my class! brandon is after me!
you could not decide on 6br or 6x47 so you got both?
my 6.5x47 pieces are in.

pashooter20br,ya better start shooting something in that 6mm soon! my .243 varmint is all loaded up and patiently waiting for it.

I have 350 20 BR cases preped and ready to load let me know if thats a record preping 350 cases in one day...I haven't been wasting time...when the money comes in the 6mm will shoot.

Brad, do you have to go and be a copy cat and get a 6mm just like me...can't you just be like Mark and shoot a 243. haha naaa im glad you are...we can both put an woopin on mark. we are definately gonna have to exchange some load data when we start shooting....maybe if yours shoots better than mine youll trade...:)

two 6mm's to deal with,cool!
20br is down two pitchers of beer already for the secerets that he is getting, make it hurt more if he wants your load data!

Ok OK I am picking up the 6rem on sunday. Ordered redding dies. Going to use rem brass, fed primers and 87v-max over h4350. Ill let you guys know how it goes. I got it for my long range hog gun as i sold my 22-250AI last fall to get ericka a 6ppc. She loves it, Panda-leupold-kreiger,a lot to love. So now i get a new gun, good deal huh.
