70 grain VLD 12 twist .223

Anyone have any luck shooting 70gr VLD in a 12 twist .223? Accurate? What powders and velocities? The reason I ask is I'm looking at a Rem 700 .223 but I far as I can tell it is only offered in 1 in 12 twist. I'm going to be setting this up for my boy to shoot F-class out too 600yds and would like the heavy bullet it will handle. Thanks for looking.

i would assume that you are talking about the berger 70 vld. i don't think that a 12" twist will stabalize the 70 vld, even if you really push the bullet velocity wise. i shot 70 bergers in a 24" hart 1-7" out of an ar-15 and got mediocre results. i was just loading them to magazine length--a lot of jump. i think if you had a 9" twist you would be better off and you wouldn't have to push the velocity so high. with the 12" twist, you will be better suited to 45-60 grain bullets. check out the 52 bthp, it is a wonerfully accurate bullet and have shot some extremely nice groups with it out of an ar-15 9" twist. hope this helps.

Hello,I don't mean to jump the post but is there a bullet you would recommend for shooring 660 yards in a rifle wth a 1-12 twist?

.223 at 600 yds needs some weight and that means maybe 69's at least. The heavier the better 77's and 80's and you wont pull it off with a 1:12 or even get close.

You'll see a warning on the boxes of bullets that 69 and heavier bullets (Sierra) should not be fired in a barrel with a twist greater than 1:9 / 1:10. They will key hole at 100 yards and your barrel will cook after 3 rounds.

If your set on shooting a .223 at 600 think along the line of a 1:7 - 1:9 and you can shoot some good scores.

1-in-12" twist .223 Remington barrels are perfect for 35-60 grain bullets. Attempting to make this twist ratio into something it was not meant to be . . . waste of experimental effort. USE it for what it was designed to do: dusting varmints, culling coyotes, smacking deer. Dusting: 36 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade . . . Culling: 55 grain Speer T-N-T HP . . . Smacking: 60 grain Nosler Partition. How simple a 1-in-12" twister becomes when one realizes its intended potential. 70 grain VLDs were not intended for 1-in-12" twist .22 Centerfires. Cliffy

For 1-in-12" twist .223 Remington, I find a 52 to 55 grain bullet quite adequate to reach well-out-there when required. Experiment with Alliant ReLoder 10x powder and CCI 450 "Magnum" Primers starting with 24.0 grains of powder which will over-power no .223 Remington bolt-action rifle . . . careful handloading is "everything" regarding learning what your rifle is capable of doing. I mainly shoot at 300 yards, but I can "Bust-some-Myths" at over 500 yards with a 1-in-12" twist. You can too! Cliffy

Forget about the Remington and the 1 in 12 twist Take a second look at the
Savage 223 it comes in 1 in 9 twist standard and in 1 in 7 in some models optional. They shoot really well and are priced right.

Get the remington 5r milspec it comes with a 1in9 twist and a 24 inch barrel. mine shoots the 70 grn bergers and 75 amaxes very competitively and you will not be let down. All i have done is adjust the trigger (turned the screw) and it is great took third place in a f-class match (600 yards) yesterday with the bergers and last weekend won a match at 500 yards. Great rifle for the money. I actually got it for my wife to shoot f-class tr but I am really enjoying it and may have to get myself one to.

wrong rifle for a twist that slow. You need a faster twist like 1:9 for anything over 55 gr~!
