7 wsm vs 7 prc

First of all, I don’t own a 7 wsm (yet) but do have a straight 284 and 7mm mag. The 7 wsm has always intrigued me but brass is so hard to find that I have not moved forward with ordering a barrel. I’m seeing a lot of interest in the 7 prc lately. In reading up on it, to me it seems to be slightly inferior to the 7 wsm. Am I missing something or is it just because the 7 prc is the new kid in the block?

Lots of good things being written on 7PRC for a F/Class replacement for .284 ?
I had a 7 rem SM very nice Brass a Trouble.
Have two .284 Target Rifles now. They are VG at 1000 yards.

I think the op is talking about the factory 7PRC which is about .250” longer than the 6.5/7PRC wildcat. But the 6.5/7PRC sure is interesting!

I guess what I’m saying is they are both so similar why aren’t people just using the 7 wsm with a longer throat to seat the bullets out further?

Wouldnt fit a short action and i believe some folks have tried the 7 wsm in various competitions and i dont think it can outshoot the saum and 284’s. So it kinda died but yeah brass would have hurt popularity as well.

Ah gotcha, so it wasn’t holding it’s own. But isn’t 7 prc approaching 7 saum dimensions?

The 7 SAUM ,.. IS,.. THE "way" to, go,.. now !
ADG makes Brass and IT IS, the near perfect Size for, driving the bigger, 7mm boolitz, accurately at, LONG, Range !
Sadly, BOTH, Winchester and Remington's, Bean Counters,.. "Dropped the Ball" on, their 7 mm's, SUPPORT !
All the 7 PRC "Stuff",.. will be available, soon and it should be, a great,.. Elk/ Moose, Cartridge

From a hunting perspective, i'm gonna pass on the 7mm PRC.
Aside from burning a little less powder, it doesn't do anything that the 7mm Rem Mag already does.
Plus i usually shoot bullets in the 150-168gr range.
So having a chamber geared towards the 180gr freebore does nothing for me.
I already have a 7mm Weatherby Magnum that i can't seat out to the lands with.

No its abit longer than the 7 wsm which is bit longer than the saum. The saami 7prc is a long action with coal of 3.34. Its basically a beltless 7mm rem mag with likely a bit more efficient case being short and fat, and ofcourse throated to seat the 180 heavies out appropriately.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I like my 7mag a lot. If I ever get one it would be for recreational shooting and hunting. I’m looking forward to reading people’s experiences with it as they have more time to fiddle with it.

I shoot a 7WSM. Brass isn't that hard to find. Win and Hornady brass is available most of the time. I use prepped Win brass with reasonably good results. Unfortunately, if you're interested in using premium brass, there isn't any. You could use 270WSM or 300WSM brass but the conversion is a PITA.

Physically, the 7WSM is a bit shorter and fatter than the PRC which seems to be the trend for efficient combustion. They are very similar ballistically. I can shoot a 180gr bullet at close to 3,000 fps but generally shoot bullets in the 160gr class. Lately, I've been shooting the 143 Hammer bullet which is accurate and an efficient killer of game. At 3,300 fps it may just be the best option for hunting out to 500yds or so.

That class mono bullet at 3300 should be stout hammer on game!
All the Hammers seem to have similar terminal performance. I shot a whitetail at 501yds with a 124H from a 6.5PRC. The bullet shank exited with the petals tightly surrounding it, as best as I could tell.

Just for fun, I loaded some 85gr Hammers in my Creedmoor at 3,700 ft/sec. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to shoot any game with it yet.
