7 SAUM Powder For 140-150gr Bullets

Dead Eye

Anyone loading 140-150 grain bullets in a 7 SAUM? Looking for powder recommendations. I was thinking of trying RL16 or RL23. Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

I think RL 23 would be a touch slow. It is not a very dense powder and fills the case up fast. 61 grains of RL 23 was about equal with 64 grains of H1000. RL 16 and H4350 are very close in burn rate.

I haven't used lighter bullets in the SAUM, but H4350 is on the faster side, but works great with 180gn bullets. It is more dense than RE16 apparently, so I would expect H4350 to be one of the first powders to try with lighter bullets in the 7 SAUM.

The 7mm SAUM is a fun cartridge to load develop because of the variety of bullet designs and powders which will perform with each class of bullets. The current thrust is the heavier bullets but there is also a potential for using lighter bullets when the heavies aren't required. I was using Nosler Accubonds to test but when it was time to hunt I switched to Nosler Partitions and slightly reduced ranges. I have now worked with the 143 Hammer Hunter bullet and I may switch my hunting over to it.;)

Yes H-4350 will work just fine as will Hybrid 100V albeit at a slightly reduced velocity but cooler burning powder.

I prefer Re-23 for the increased case fill and slightly cooler burning.

Norma MRP is a top pick for me.

Ramshot Hunter has provided some good groups and is great for filling from a powder measure.

If you want all the gusto run VVN-550 for top velocities.:D

Kurtz,
The 143 Hammer Hunter is the bullet I am starting with. I am looking for velocity as well as accuracy and hoping to find a combination to get me comfortably out to 500 yds on deer size game. Doing this with a 17” barrel.

I've just started playing with a new 7SAUM that I built, I have a very good load for 139-140 gr bullet using RL-17, I also have a very good load with RL-26 using 162 gr ELD's. RL-16 would work fine but 17 will give you more speed. I'm using a can on a 21.5" barrel and can get 3150 fps with RL-17, about 2925 with the RL-26 load. Start at 57 grs of RL-17 & go up. Start with 61 grs of RL-26 and go up.

And a suppressor?

No suppressor just a brake:). It's an Xp-100 pistol. I shot some 120 V-Max to fire form some brass and break in the barrel. Even blasted a groundhog out by my barn......very hard on groundhogs:eek::D Going to look at RL-17 too.

Could also be hard on the barn as well!;)

Re-17 would be the one I'd run in short barrels such as you are using. You can get some VVN-150 which will burn properly in that barrel. Re-17 will have the edge on velocity but the performance burn-wise will be just about the same. I was running some at standard magazine length while testing others at my DBM length which is longer. Any situation in which you want to use that barrel will result in a lot of plasma being pushed out the front of that barrel so be careful shooting early or late because of the muzzle flash.:D
