7 Rem Mag Varmint loads?

Hi Team - I'm dusting off my Sako 85 7 Rem Mag & want to put together some varmint loads. The speer TNT's would work well but have the BC of a trash bin so were looking at the 120gr Vmax with a stiff load of perhaps RL22. Other choice is maybe something in the 139/140gr range like an SST or ballistic tip. Any other projectiles I should be considering here? Is there a powder of choice to push these lightweights at warp speed for maximum mist effect?

"120gr Vmax with a stiff load of perhaps RL22"

yes, and yes. I can't remember what my exact load is, but I remember the velocity ~3550.

lethal I tell ya! Lethal! don't plan on saving any pelts.

120g V max
72-73g of R#22
cci 250****very important
seat to touch the lands
3500 fps
SPLAT!

Curious what difference you found that specific primer made. I'm assuming it's tied up with pressure as 72-73g RL22 looks like a stiff load. I wonder if the new RL23 would yield similar results.

We have shot this load in numerous 7 mags that were Browning and Rem 700s, it just works. Yes, it is a stout load and you should work up to it like you should on every load you read on the internet.

CCI 250 makes the load come alive in terms of small groups. A friend shot 215's with good results but I have never shot them, neither has brother or cousins...all cci 250's.

We shoot remington brass out of habit, Winchester is tougher but we all have found nodes with the Rem and just live with the brass life.

You will have to play with seating depth, start off at touching and jump in small amounts. With the 120g Nosler ballistic tip with the same load, they like to touch in all cases, and we jump the 120g Tsx and the TTSX .050 with the same load. It is amazing how accurate the nosler and barnes bullets are with this load.

I have no idea on R#23, the powder is scarce as hen's teeth in my area.

Hey all my go to load for 7 rem Mag is Sierra 100 HP with a compressed load of RL17,
non mag primers and .50 to .100 off the lands, which produce speeds well into the 4000 fps range.

PS: RL19 and RL22 also work well as well as HYbrid 100 if you can find it.

I use 75gr of powder start with RL22 see how that goes then go to RL19
then start at 70gr of RL17 and go up from there.

For the 7 mag, I liked the 139 SST with Re 22 - near max from Hornady manual, CCI 250 primer. My thinking is that at beyond 350 or so the velocity is somewhat more than obtained with the 120 Vmax. I sold my 7 mag but now I shoot a .280 with Re23 & the 139 SST, for varmints, definitely over kill on rodents but should I get the chance to shoot a deer it should work just fine.

What is your intended target? I bought a box of Hornady 100 grain hp's to try to make PDogs fly to the sky, just have not worked up a load.

Just bought the Hornaday manual and they have powder listings, but they are all still pretty slow, is there still anyways to make a less hot version that will still be safe?
