7 PRC loads with custom turret

I have a 7 PRC that i had custom turrets set up for my N565 load. I can not find any for sale currently. Am I wrong for thinking I can work up some H-1000 to the same velocity as the N565 load and every thing should be faily close. I have the other handload and can make the ammo the same with the hornady comparator tool. what is your thoughts on this or am I way off base on my thought?

Your thinking is correct. Match velocity and bullet BC and you should be good to go. This may be an instance were a tuner may be your best friend. Good luck with your project!

Yes. If you're velocity is the same then it will match up to your turret. The problem comes in when the new powder tunes at a different velocity which it usually does.

I think i will do a ladder style test then fine tune to get the same velocities. I will be using same bullet, primer and case just swapping powder.

I would validate with the new powder just to be sure. A little hint I use when I do LR hunting clinics is to have the hunter "calibrate" the turret or reticle for the farthest distance you plan to shoot, forcing any error or discrepancy to a closer distance.

For example, let's say the load varies by .75 MOA at 700 yards, calibrate or zero the turret for that distance. The error will be less at closer distances. I'd rather be correct at 700 yards than 5.25" off. A .75 MOA error is still a killing shot at 100, 200, 300....

@dthomas brings up an important consideration above. There is no guarantee that a load with H-1000 will tune in at the same velocity as a load with N565. In other words, if you match the N565 velocity using H-1000, the external ballistics should still match with your custom turrets. But that is no guarantee that the internal ballistics using H-1000 will necessarily produce a load that shoots as well at that particular velocity. Obviously, you can test that and find out. But the consideration here is that if a load with N565 tunes in at a significantly different velocity than H-1000, the turret(s) may still not match the external ballistics.

Everyone thank you for the replies. I wish i could just stumble across some N565 but until then guess im going back to the drawing board to work up a H1000 load. luckly i have 40 rounds made up of N565 rounds.

Or just throw the custom turret in the trash and put one with mil or moa on it. Your ballistic calculator/range finder combo will tell you what number to turn the dial to regardless of the temperature, altitude shot angle, muzzle velocity or powder used. Vs your custom turret only working with that one bullet speed combo at that altitude etc.

Agreed custom dials are a waste of time for the exact reason the OP is asking. Not to mention if you go hunt someplace at a different altitude, temp or pressure your turret was designed for. Great idea but not real practical. MOA or Mill turret is the only way to go.
