7 mm saum ackley improved

i am having a barrel chambered for this round. does anyone know whats kind of velocity's i will achieve out of a 22 inch barrel with this ackley?

well, it is chambered right now for the 7 stw, so i think that i can get at least 22" out of it. the twist rate is 1/8 so, i know that i need heavy bullets. 175 grn? thoygh, i am not sure if i can go any lighter? type of bullet i am still looking into. i want something that is accurate, but also for hard hitting for hunting. i think i might go with some hornady A-maxs, and maybe sierra game kings. just a tought. any advice? brian

Just a couple of thoughts if I were limited to a 22inch barrel I would stick with the standard 7mm SAUM chamber the dies will be cheaper and it will save you the fire forming process I think you will have more powder capacity than barrel to burn in as far as bullets you should be fine with a good 168 or 180 in my 300 SAUM the AMAX shot okay but the Berger's shot much better
Hope some of this helps

Ill have to second Ricks advice.

Shooting a large case with a 22" barrel is not to productive. With that being said it surely HAS been done for a short fast handeling rifle. I would imagine the velocities would be down to around the 7mm 08' area or a little better., just guessing here). If it were me, I would save that barrel for a 7mm08' Ackley project down the road & order a new barrel with a nice Break on the end.

I will have to say that Im a huge fan of the 162gr Amax for deer hunting. Ive shot two 200 lbs + Mule deer with it not to mention countless whitetail & it has performed flawlessly. This is out of a 7mm RM and a 280 Ackley.
I put my best freind behind my sendero this last year & he shot a doe at 796 yards with the Amax. She never even twitched, she expired imidiatly witha perfect shot to the vitals.

Hope this helps you. Look around for a good barrel & take the plunge. 9twist will be fine for just about all bullet sizes.

My new 7mm saumAI Bartlein barrel measures at 30 inches with a 1 in 9 twist. I would not bother chambering a 22 inch barrel in a 7mmsaumAI for all the above mentioned reasons especially if your looking at some long range shooting.
Up close, say out to 300 yards or so it would be OK, but your barrel would be better suited to the 7/08.....
The 162 grain A-max is a awesome bullet and Midway has them on sale now....
It's not a problem shooting light weight bullets in a 1 in 8 twist 7mm...

well, i did all the math with the cutting of the old chamber and the chambering of the new, and found that i can actually get 25 inches of barrel, and 1.25 iches of muzzel brake. ,i know that the muzzel brake does not count, but figured id through it in there.) thanks guys for all the input. keep it coming. brian
