7.62x53r accurate for competing?

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
So I actually had my start with this cartridge and had strayed away from it a 6BRX and 6.5x47. But recently have been messing with it again. I noticed in some of Lapuas literature that the only cartridge in their catalog that got the moniker "extremely accurate" was the 7.62x53r. Not even the 220 Russian once formed into 6PPC gets that moniker from Lapua! As a result I have been back to experimenting with it this time using a modern barrel.

A five shot group like this at 110y I just cant ignore. Perhaps I should try to find a modern action and BR quality scope. That was not the only one hole group I shot either.

This rifle is not a competition worthy gun as its over 20lbs. Main weakness is three fold. Scope, Stock (its to heavy at 8.5lbs) and the action. If I could build something to remedy all three? It has me thinking. ;)
Some pics of my setup for you to enjoy.

Just want to remind everyone that a Mosin 91/30 is still a Mosin no mater the barrel and stock or scope. Gun control advocats want this changed. Don't help them. Hence the retoroc "that AR15 is scary cause its black" we see from liberals.

Here Are the specifics on it.
Mosin Nagant 91/30 round receiver highwall single comb wide tang and the action was trued up. Stamped 1942. Has a bent bolt rock solid scope mount SWFA20x42. Bluegrass stock that is heavy at 8.5lbs. LotherWalther barrel with a .311 bore finished at 23in long 1:10 twist. Timney triger.

What are the particulars on your load? If its top secret bullet wieght and velocity would satisfy me. Thanks Shawn
I would have to look at my notes again. I was doing load development so starting at 53gr working up to 53.8gr in .2gr increments. I need to load some more up. Past experiance was that there is a good node around 54gr. I also did some at 51.6gr and they shot very well if you can get over the lower MV of 2450fls.

When you said that the Sierra was the only good bullet, you proved that the 7.62 is not a good choice. Is it capable probably. But to compete you need a system that has already been proven to be capable. Otherwise you will be testing parts, pieces, bullets and powder ect, ect not winning matches. If you want to reinvent the wheel then do it , it will be fun! But it is not the best way to compete. Who beats the 6PPC in group on a regular basis?

I have 2 Finnish Mosins that have .308 groove dia. The Finns used .308 until the M39 when they went to .311 to be able to use the Russian ammo

The 7.62x53r is .308 bore. The 7.62x54r uses the .311, I have one of each so its sorta a void point.

Well I am sure that's the way you see it but not what I was trying to say. There are so many shooting the 6PPC in short range benchrest that should you have a problem you can post on the net or call others and have the solution in minutes most times. Problems with a cartridge that nobody else is shooting leaves nobody to help you find the cure to your problem. When I had a gunsmith build my first semi custom rifle I was asking him to help me make up my mind on which 6.5 cartridge to use. He told me if you want to compete use what is most popular, so when finding a load its on the net, and you can use the work of others to move along faster and farther than you could go on your on. I am sure that if you want a project to make a road racer out of a coffee table you can spend till your wallet gives out. But if you want to compete soon use the wisdom of others that have gone before you. Either is a fun project!!! If you decide to build a Mosin rifle you are doing it cause you want to be different, not win competitions.

I was thinking more on the lines of 300-600 yard competing for score. Not 100-200. The PPC is king there and I have seen nothing that can beet it there. In 300-600 there seams to be opportunities for score based competing. No I would not use another mosin receiver. Maybe a Kelbly

We got a handful of these milsurps a couple of years ago when everything was topsy. One or two of them even with triggers like trying to break a greenstick and sights were certainly combloc would shoot close to an inch with the sardine can ammo that was around. I managed to round up some 0.311" bullets, and some PP brass and loaded some ammo with H380 at the higher midrange of published data. These loads, Hornady if I remember would frequently shoot under an inch for 5. The rudimentary plow sights didnt help, but in spite of the hurdles including old eyes the buggers would shoot. So, if a rifle were assembled with good components and care they ought to shoot first rate.
