I recently purchased a Howa 1500 Mini Action in 7.62x39 and It shoots well. I got a Redding 3 die set but as I found out the expander plug is sized for .308 bullets and i couldn't load the bullets i had on hand. Redding is sending me the expander plug for .311. What I am considering is that as the neck sizing die sizes the neck down neck appropriately for .308 it is sizing the neck down further than is necessary for .310 or .311 witch is likely to work the brass more aggressively shortening reload life. So with that in mind I started looking for a neck die with interchangeable neck bushing coming up with an LE Wilson that requires a separate press to use. I would rather deal with a standard die that fits my press, does anyone know of anyone making one available off the shelf.
At least my RCBS 7.62x54r dies came with both expander plugs (unfortunately i didn't have that set on hand) but the "overworking the neck" issue is probably the same. I had kind of a hiatus from reloading for while and now is seams that interchangeable neck bushing dies have become more the standard for bolt action reloading.
Has anyone gone through expense or change from neck sizing (with standard expander plugs) only for their individual rifles to bushing neck sizing for each rifle and was it worth it?
Update : Found a Redding TYPE S Bushing die in 7.62x39 so I will try that.
