7.62 X 39 Necked To 6mm?

I know the 6 PPC uses this case and it's shortened slightly, has anybody taken the 7.62 X 39 and just necked it down? Any idea what it would be called if it's been done?

The 6mm Beggs is basically the 220 Russian case necked up to 6mm and with slightly altered shoulder transitions to help stop case growth.

Why bother necking down 7.62 x39 brass? Most of it is large primer and low pressure brass so where will that lead?

Kend,
The 220 Russian I mentioned IS a necked down 7.62x39. The biggest advantage to the 220 case is the small flash hole and the small rifle primer. Actually the biggest advantage is that Lapua makes superb 220 brass. The 220 case is the basis for the 6PPC.

Don't make a big deal about that large primer. The original 220 Russian Running Deer match ammo as well as the LAPUA 5.6 x 39 Match ammo all had the large primer. SAKO 220 Russian ammo was the first to use the small primer.

The parent of the 22 and 6 PPC, the 6mm Eraser, had a large primer as well. It was based on the 220 Swift. All of the premier Benchrest cartridges of the early years used large rifle primers.

Everytime this topic comes up, I have to bite my lip.

I have probably turned the necks on 10,000+ PMC 7.62x39 cases with the large rifle primer to be fired in 22 & 6 PPC guns for ground squirrels and p. dogs.

Just for the record, in a BR gun, these PMC 7.62x39 cases will agg in the low 2's and high ones consistantly, given condition to do so.

One note however, Win, Rem, Federal, and IMI 7.62x39 brass is pure junk to use on the PPC because of soft brass. The Lapua and the PMC is gold if you can find it, for informal and varmint use.

In the origional tests of large and small rifle primers, there was only a .035 difference in groups size between the two. .035 is huge in competition, but not in informal target shooting and varmint shooting.
