7/300 Weatherby??

Todd. I had a 7-300 wby and I used h870 or 7828 with the 168 smk. You can call Bob Wolfe for info on this cartridge as his father now deceased invented this cartridge. The number I have is 717-966-0449 he lives in Mifflinburg Pa.
Hope this helps

Todd i have a old handloader magazine that has a story about the 7/300, its old stuff. My be i can post some powders.

Many years ago I used H870. It was dirty. There are many newer slow burning powders for overbore cartridges. Look at what works well in the 7mm RUM and 7mm STW and it will give you an idea of a couple powders to try. If you experiment too much you will use half your barrel life getting a load.

Todd,
I have had very good luck in my 7STW ( case capacity very close to your 7/300) using IMR7828 and RL22. This was with 140 and 150 grain hunting bullets. I always use use the Federal 215 mag primers in a case this big. I get 3400 fps with the 140's and about 3350 fps with 150 grain bullets. I used the 150gr Scirrocco for elk.
Hope this helps some,
Gary

If I had a 7-300 Weatherby I would shoot 180 Berger VLD hunting bullet and try Reloader 33. The 33 should get you over 100 FPS more then anything else. Guys are using this powder in almost everything from the big 338's to a 6-284 with good results and 100 to 150 more velocity then anything else. Would make it a very good longrange hunting gun. One thing about the RE33 is it seems to want the bullet from a touch to in. Like it doesn't want a jump. It may need that to get the pressure curve up to burn the powder right. Matt

I have been researching a 7/300 Win.Mag wildcat I'm building. I can't remember where, but I've seen a few(5-6) places it was listed. Keep searching, they're on the net somewhere. Apparently it used to be a fairly popular wildcat at some point. I just looked at "Loaddata.com", it's listed, but I can't get in right now. I've been having compuker problems lately, so you might try. I would be very conservative adapting other load data to it if for no other reason of the different shoulder shape changeig the case pressure. Just my WAO, Paul

I built one two years ago for a hunting buddy. We use Retumbo and R25 with 180 Bergers. Have not tried R33 yet. Why anyone would build such a rifle and use anything less than the the 180s is beyond me. It is a long range cartridge no matter how you slice it.

Well...... Since this is the internet and EVERBODY shoots their game at 1000+ yards, you must be right!

You don't have to shoot game at 1000 yds to appreciate that wonderful 180 Berger bullet. It works pretty good at 300 yards too!

Gonna throw a kink in the bunch. I'm looking for a prarie dog gun with a 1-11" twist shooting the light weight bullets out of a 30" + barrel. Just want to see how high I can make them go in the air. I know what most are going to say, But I just want to have fun on this next hunt as it might be my last. So barrel life is dependant on this one hunt. Thanks for all the input.

I ave 204s=22=6mms and 6-284s all that shoot lightweight V-Max type bullets. I just want to see how high I can make a dog go in the air. They do a good job, But just want something else with a bigger upset. Thanks!!

To blow them prairie dawgs up real good, might consider a 7mm Rem Ultra Mag with the barrel twist for your bullet of choice. Maybe a 7mm/378wby... What a rocket that would be!

Pretty hard to do better than a 6mm/284 though... Maybe go with some JLK 60gr bullets or something more exotic

For a straightforward bomber there's always the .264 Winchester or .257wby or even the .270wby mag. When I began handloading at age 14, I thought the cat's meow was the 90gr Sierra hp with a max load from my .270win. It sure blew up a water-filled gallon milk jug very impressively. Laid the plastic flat along its seamlines with just an entry hole... Water blew straight up like a geyser on impact If looking for this kind of result, probably more a function of bullet frangibility than solely velocity.

Hope you have many prairie dog excursions left in you. One more hotdog ctg to consider is the .244rem AI. Might have more luck finding brass for that one somewhere these days

Todd You have put a different perspective on things. Load it up to the max. and have some fun.
Best wishes and prayers for you.

Bill

Varmint loads? ok,

I was fireforming 7mmstw loads out of 8mm mag brass with 100 gr Sierra hollow points. They averaged 3631fps with a charge of RL 22 and were much more accurate than I expected. I don't think this was a max loading but they "absolutely blew up groundhogs and some other stuff".
Those Sierra 100gr hp bullets don't hold up very well at the longer ranges but out to a couple hundred yards...

Best regards,
Gary

Hi Lineman, what kind of velocity are you getting out the the 168 bergers, and what is your barrel lenth? Also where did you get you loading data?

i used a 340 WBY shooting 180 ballistic tips for something along those lines. You can push the ballistic tips faster than any other bullet. i would thing 140s at 4000+

I have read that any loads for the 7 STW can be used in the 7mm.300WBY
I have been playing with the 140 gr. Nosler ballistic tips in my 7mm/300WBY. I have a 1 in 9 twist 28 inch Hart barrel. I started with 78 grs. of IMR 7828SSC and worked my way up to 86.5 grs which gave me 3625 fps. 86 grs was my most accurate load so far and I was doing all my testing at 300 yds. 3 shot groups were 1.250 and now I have to vary the seating depth. These were 3.825 OAL.
If I get a chance I am going to try some Bergers.
Tarey

My old load for a 7STW was 84gr IMR 7828, 140 Nosler BT, reformed Rem 8mm brass, fed 215, loaded 3.7" OAL. Gave 3550fps in a 26" barrel. This is just for reference and it looks like the IMR 7828 series is a good powder to start with.
