7/08

Hi I shoot "f class " with a 6.5/285 . The barrel shot out at 1200 rounds including setting it back at 900 rd. I'm looking for good barrel life , has any one tried a 7/08 with 185 gr Bugers ?

Not that particular combo but used to shoot a 30" 7mm-08 with the 175gr MatchKings. It shot really well but was a pain to get dialed in, so was the 7mm-08 hunting rifle I put together. A great round on paper and when they work but accuracy was finicky for me, YMMV.

For F-Class, you'll be much better off to go to a straight .284 Win. 2k round barrel life and runs the 180 class bullet right in the sweet spot.

^^^^^ Excellent advice! This is the way to go..

Wow that's all the barrel life the 284 has? I would have thought it would be more than that. How hot are you running it?

It is NOT that there is not "more barrel life" per se. It is that there is no more ACCURATE barrel life, as in 1/3M.O.A. to 1/2M.O.A. at 1000 yards. Remember in F-Open at 1000 yards, it is "generally" 20 shots PLUS unlimited sighters, amounting to at least 25 shots. The barrel get smokin' hot, especially in the summer. All that times 3 matches per day and your throat can only take so much. Throat erosion and firecracking etc..etc. will take it's toll on a barrel when put under such heat and stress.. Ergo, somewhere in the vicinity of 2,000 ACCURATE rounds..

I have about 1850 rounds through mine and am shooting some of the best scores I've ever shot. Just shot a 592 yesterday. I did have my barrel looked at after last match, a month ago, GS said I have two lands showing uneven wear, in the throat, but why fix it if it aint broke? My x count was down tho.

Sorry OP didn't mean to take your post off track.

Watching your "X" count diminish is the first real sign of the barrel headed south.. It won't be long now..

I retired a 284 shehane barrel at around 1300 rounds. at its prime (250-700 rounds), it was shooting very well. after about 700 rounds, X Count dimished a lot and holding X ring vertical became harder and harder to do. after it's final match (it will be used for fireforming now), I went and did a full clean. you won't believe the amount of "blue" coming out of the muzzle after giving the bore some sweets and a good number of scrubs. after that, it was apparent with all the firecracking I saw.

I shoot F-Open using 7mm-08.
30" Brux barrel 1:9 twist
2700fps
180gr. Berger Hybrids jumping .025"-.030"
H4350 powder
.240" freebore seats Hybrids around .070" above shoulder

This is only my second season shooting the 7mm-08. I don't know the barrel life with this configuration.
Recoil is much less than the .284Win if that is a consideration.
Brass life and barrel life should be about 3 times that of the .284Win.
The extra 150fps velocity of the .284Win gives them the edge.

Hope this helps

I have a 7-08, love it as a hunting rifle.

In F Open, your running a round that is slightly better than a 308 against everyone else. If you are dead set on F-Open the 284 Win is probably the ticket.

.284 again. I dont shot competition but read enough post on here in the past years. Thats what id run if i did it. Lots of info on it around here.

Thanks for the reply . I know the FTR guys are firing 200 gr. bullets in the 308w with 3000 to 4000 rounds from a barrel , I through the the 7/08 would be about the same ?
I would shoot FTR but I can't get on with a bipod

Here are some of my observations about F-Class concerning barrel life:

For the sake of argument, lets say a .284 last 1,000rounds and a .308 lasts 4,000. The price of a new barrel is the same for each at around $330. The .284 cost 33cents per round fired and the .308 cost 8cents per round, for a difference of 25cents per round for cost of barrel life. At 66 shots per match, that is $16.5.
All other expenses being equal, a 66 shot match will cost you about $100 on average; bullets($30), powder($15), gasoline to the match($25), entry fee ($30). The barrel life is costing about 15 percent of the match.
Not that much, considering the bigger picture. And if you start to include other cost, like rifle and equipment, motel rooms and food, the cost of barrel life is just another minor expense of the sport.

F-class is an expensive sport no matter what your cartridge you choose.
F-Open has evolved to the point that, if you want to be competitive and asumning you can shoot a High Master score, a 284Win or its variants is the better choice for 1,000yd Long Range. At 1,000 yards, every small detail comes into play, and the edge of the 284 is just enough to make it the chosen cartridge. 600 yard Mid Range is a little different. I see guys win using any number of different cartidges with calibers of: 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm & .308. The 284 still has an edge, but it does not play into it quite as much.

It is still F-Open, shoot the cartridge you want to shoot and have fun doing it.

If you want to do a 7mm08 for F-Open, AI and you will get very close to 284 MV with better barrel life and case life. Im on my 2nd chamber in my barrel and its awesome. Going to play with RL17 after my next match and see how easy it does 2820-2850. Im at 2770fps with 180gr VLD and H4350.

Quickoz, what barrel length are you using? I also am pondering a 7-08 to shoot 180 Bergers. How much help is the AI?
