6XCII bbl length ??

how short of a 8 twist .237 bbl in 6XCII chamber could a person still get 3,000 fps from the 105 Berger VLDH orange box bullets with deer hunting type accuracy,,something like MOA at 400 yards would be good enough for this,,

I am hoping to use a Bartlien 2b contour bbl and hope that 24 or even 22 inches will get me to 3000 fps with the XC,,

trying to decide on which way to go for a deer rifle for my 13 year old son,,

I have a good Rem short action just need a bbl and a CDL or Mountain Rifle stock,,

What's wrong with 2900 fps? Still plenty of energy left at 400 yds.

nuthin I suppose is wrong with 2900 or 2800 for that matter,,but if thats all I wanted I would do a Dasher or maybe a straight BR,,

I'm just saying for a deer rifle I would be more concerned with weight and handling than velocity.

we shoot a lot of 105 VLD orange box bullets at 3000 fps from my 6 BRDX,,I would like to keep the speed the same in the hunting rifle as the target rifles to be able to teach the kid the dope on the target rifle and he will be able to switch that training and shooting in the wind to his hunting rifle without having to actually shoot it a lot,,

if the XC wont hit 3,000 in a 22-24 inch bbl I may look into a 6 SLR or maybe even a straight 243,,

I understand your points and concerns with a young shooter.
I just checked my shooter app and compared 2800 to 3000 fps with 105 Hybrids. There is less than one inch difference in drift with a 10 MPH crossing wind. I don't think the deer nor your son would notice the difference.
If the rifle will only be a hunting rifle I would go with the 243. Readily available brass, factory ammo if unforeseen circumstances happen, and probably never wear out the barrel.
