6xc want to try 4451 with 115 DTACS

Hey Fellas, got a quick question, I have a Savage 6xc rifle with Benchmark 26 inch Barrel, my regular load is 39 grains of h4350 .015 off the lands with a 115 DTAC with hbn coating. I picked up a pound of the new Enduron 4451 and it looks like it will also do good in this cartridge but havent found any info on how many grains to use on 6xc, I have sent an email to Hodgdon but havent heard anything back yet, I looked on Quickload and that powder is to new so I dont have it on there either so was wandering if any of you guys have any loading data for me or point me in the direction of where to go to get it. Thanks Todd

Pretty new product for us here in the states to have published data even for a cartridge that's now as well-established as 6XC. Only cartridge I can find using it (so far) is 280 Remington which isn't at all close to 6XC in case volume.

Why (I'm just curious) would you choose this product over something advertised as being more appropriate for 308 / 22-250 case volume? I've had exceptionally good results since about 2008 using their 8208XBR behind Berger's 105VLD & Hybrid bullets (hBN-coated and plain) in my 6XC barrels.

When I started with that it was an unknown too, so much so that I took some rounds loaded as an afterthought along for a day's testing of four other propellants. Turned out of the five it was by far the best for low SD's and vertical dispersion when shot at 600 yards. I've since settled on 36.5 grains for my needs out to 1,000 yards, last weekend winning a 3-match long range (sling & irons) aggregate in Minnesota with it.

As I see your post is your very first here I'd like to welcome you to the forum with this caveat for your safety: common sense dictates caution when treading unbroken ground in circumstances such as these.

If you do choose to go this route please do try first to find some kind of verified load data for cartridges a little larger and smaller in case capacity as a guide to where to begin.

It would be reassuring knowing what your prior reloading experience is too. There's too great a potential for "load'n'shoot" info taken verbatim off the Internet to put the unwary over onto the danger side of the equation. We here as a group prefer a more cautious approach in the interests of our own safety and that of others who may be present when we're shooting.

So called 'accidents' are usually avoidable but inevitably ruin everyone's day.

Sure understand totally, I have been loading for twenty plus years from 204 all the way up to the 50 bmg, I have 4 reloading presses and probably spend 10 -15 hours a week reloading I also have about 15 reloading books and manuals, the only book that I have that even has 6xc in it is the Berger book but it doesnt list the 4451 powder either probably because it is to new. I decided to try the 4451 powder because supposedly it is close to H4350 and sometimes I have a hard time finding that so I figured if this was close I can work up a backup powder plan, you mention suited for 308 or 22-250 capacity, actually this powsder is supposed to be close to H4350 and the 4166 would be more suited for the 308

duke76 I have never see that powder I was wondering if it is a long big stick powder? small stick ? spherical powder?
I would also be interested in any load data you come up with..I have been thinking about trying some RL23 also behind a 115 Berger in my new 6XC when I get it up and running.

I have seen the powder on the shelf but I have never looked into it enough to know what the advantages of the powder is?
RL17 works well in the 6XC with about the same amount of powder as H4350. start low and work up but I think most 6XC shooters who have tried RL17 agree it does produce the fastest velocity's with good accuracy .

It is a small stick, I too was going to try reloder 17 also but that powder is harder to find than H4350 and I dont believe it is quite as temp stable if it is like the other reloder powders. The advantages of 4451 is that it is temperature stable, has a copper fouling deterent with it and the biggest advantage is that my local store has a bunch of it.

well everyone can believe what they want RL17 is far more temperature stable than H4350...those who don't believe that have never actually tested in outside temperatures. they just go by what others say .. test through a chronograph and see what you find out..I even know match shooters who will say it's around 2,980 FPS at 60 deg in the morning and 3,025 FPS in the afternoon at 80 deg but hey it's extreme , temperature stable...In my test it went from 3,025 FPS at 80 deg to 2,920 FPS at 30 deg.. BUT RL17 will hold 3,150 to 3,180 FPS from 30 deg to 85 deg. that is what I found in my test. I know a few other guy's shooting it in 7WSW and they told me the same thing I found..RL17 is very temp stable..

but I understand if you cant find it to give it a try.
My only real question with the RL17 is maybe it could be hard on barrel's ? don't know..
