6XC, Varget/H4350

Not having a stockpile of H4350 led me to try Varget in my 28 5/8" 5R, medium Palma, bolt rifle. 35 gr of Varget landed within .25 MOA of 39 gr H4350 @ 600 yd with 115 new, coated DTACs. Both loads hammer x's. Short of torching the throat sooner, what's the downside?

Hi frank..I don't want to hi-jack your thread..But I would like to hear what others are doing for powder when they can't get their preferred loading..For a while we had to switch in slower burning powders..H 4350 was not available & i had to use Imr 4831..It worked in my 243 win w 105 grain bullets...Thanks Mike in Ct

Frank,
Our precision 6XC ammunition line is currently loading H4831 SC with a Russian primer. Current lot# of powder with velocity and pressure testing is allowing a 44.5 gr charge weight.
OAL of the cartridge is 2.775" with the coated DTAC 115 RBT.
Out of the 29.5" Schneider test barrel the velocity is 3175fps.

Had a friend over 2 days ago and out of his 25" (setback once) 8 twist 6XC the velocity was 2986fps average for 5 shots.

What David said. +1. (My go to load for accuracy is 40gr. in a 40" bbl., 3050fps, 105 Hyb.)

Being jr600yd got better accuracy from the slower H4831, I believe the barrel whip/harmonics was diminished by the gentler pressure curve. When I tried 39.6 of H4350 in my barrel the group opened up a bit, so 39.0 was my fastest and tightest load. Having an abundance of Varget and very good results from it in my 260 with a 142 SMK via 37.5 grains and the same basic case/capacity, I gave Varget a go. 35 grains of Varget in the 6XC landed within .25 MOA water line as 39 grains of H4350. Now the rub, The Varget grouped tighter, 10 x's vs. 9 x's with the H4350. One can only tell what a barrel is going to produce via testing and sometimes a lot of it. Now to get some H4831 SC and continue. Thanks guys.
