6xc build

I am getting ready to have built a new gun. I will use it most of the time to ground hog hunt with. A few of the guys get together and shot at 500 yds. What do you think of the 6xc for this.

The 6XC is a wonderful cartridge and you would not be unhappy with it.

That said, the 6BR is a little more accurate, takes less powder, and gets almost the same velocities with longer bbl life.

Either one, you will have fun.

More food for thought for your new build. The 6mm SUPER LR is a cross between the 6XC and the 243 WIN..

The second link is regarding my SUPER LR build.
My gun is now complete and is on 'The Big Brown Truck' with delivery scheduled form Monday. Tuesday I will be at the range testing 108BIBs and 105Lapuas.
Hope you enjoy the read and food for thought.

Barry,

I just finished chambering my bbl up for the 243 Super LR. It was an MMX (XC with the 20 degree shoulder).

For LR HP competition, I really wanted a cartridge that would shoot the 115 gr bullets at 3050 without the high pressures.

I have not gotten a chance to shoot it yet, will try to get out and fire some rounds across a chrono early this week.

Gonna try H4831sc first and some VV160 as well.

Berger 105's are also on the test list although I have had better luck with 107 SMKs in my BRX.

I had mostly R-P brass so that is where I am starting. Case forming was pretty easy although about 10 percent of the cases didn't form a good sharp shoulder. They will just have to fireform out.

Let's keep in touch and compare notes.

I'll keep you posted. Hopefully Tuesday will be my lucky day to make it to the range. We have had an exceptionally wet spring here in northwest Montana.

Single shot or mag feed? As long as the shooting is single shot and no more than 500yds, the 6BR will hang right with the 6XC and give you twice the barrel life. The 6XC will shoot 115's if you want to go that heavy, the 6BR will top out with 108's as a rule.

The 6BRX is a very good choice for what you describe.

For what you want to do, go with your original plan and get the 6xc. I've got both the 6xc and the 6br. On any given day the xc will shoot with or out shoot my 6br.

Go with a no turn neck and get the bushing type neck sizing die. And only cry once and get the Norma 6xc brass. Its expensive, but lasts a good long time.

If your gunsmith does a good job of putting it together and you do a good job reloading and shooting you'll be a happy shooter. WD

I'd take full advantage of the excellent and cheap 243 lapua brass. While having two 243 AI's I probably would have gone the 6 SuperLR if it was available at the time.

Got out today to chrono a few 243 Super LR loads.

30 inch Bartline, 7.5T, 5R rifling medium Palma bbl.

Shot both the 115 DTAC and the 105 B.

115 DTAC Moly coated

43.5 - H4831sc - RP Brass (161 gr) CCI BR primer = 2980 fps
Low vertical - need to test at 300-600 yds

105 Berger Moly coated
Piled shots into a little clover leaf.
43.5 - H4831sc - RP Brass (161 gr) CCI BR primer = 3050 fps

The above loads didn't show pressure in my rifle. Bullets were seated .020" INTO the lands and were moly coated.

The usual disclaimers apply to load data.

The 105 Berger looked like excellent accuracy but my BRX will do the same with 10 gr less powder so that is not the focus for this cartridge.

Need to find the next accuracy node at higher velocity for the 105B to make it viable. The 115DTAC is really where I want to shoot this cartridge so testing will continue.
