6XC Accuracy Node

Have any of you 6XC shooters noticed any particular velocity ranges which seem to indicate a "node" as far as accuracy is concerned? I'm curious to learn what the anecdotal evidence is with different bullet weights and how that compares to other cartriges of same caliber. Thanks, VooDoo

What barrel twist/bullet weight are you using?
What length is the barrel?
I use a 6x47 which is roughly the same size. If you have the standard 8" twist, 30" barrel, you will likely find a nice load at 3070-3080 fps.
If you are using lighter bullets, 95gn or under , you will likely find another node at 3200 fps with a 30" barrel.

Thanks for the reply, but I am not in search of "a load" to shoot in "my" gun. I'm interested in the experience of others with "their" gun. What have you found to be "your" velocity node...

I've got a pair of 6XC's. One is a bench gun with a 1-9 twist Kreiger 28" long, the other one is a Lilja sporter weight 1-10 twist 28 1/2 inches long.

In the bench gun I can change from a 95gr HPBT to an 80gr HPBT, hold the same powder charge, and the rifle will hold the same POI at 100yds.

The sporter weight will shoot 75 gr Vmax's and 70gr NBT into nearly the same hole, and this is using the same powder charge that I use in the bench gun, but with a diferent primer. :)

So in answer to your question, I believe that there is a "node" of accuracy in the cartridge but not sure whether it is speed or propellant volume related. :-\

I don't use the chrony as much as I used to. I guess I don't care too much about what the chrony says...... long as the bullet holes touch on the target that is what matters and pay$. Just my humble opinion. ;)WD

Interesting WD. I'd be curious to know what the velocity difference is between the 95 and 80 grain bullets with the same powder charge. And a strain gauge reading would be really interesting...

VooDoo: Near as I can tell there is between 150-200fps difference between the 80's & 95's. On the strain guage thing, well, not sure how to correlate it, but my shoulder says the 95's are going to be higher on the guage than the 80's.

That's another reason that I use the 80's more for the matches that I shoot that are 400yds and under. ;) The other reasons are that the barrel doesn't get as hot in a 10-12 shot relay, and the rifle rides the bags a little better too. ;D WD

I used to shoot 6XC in a T2k across the course & mid-range at 600 yards. Best accuracy in that (26" Pac Nor 1:8) was between 2850 - 2900 with the Berger 105VLD. Any higher & I'd get sticky bolt lift & other pressure signs.

Had a dedicated 600 - 1,000 yard 6XC rifle built in 2008 (Quadlite, Bartlein 30" 5R 1:7.7) that's awesome at 3125 - 3150 with the same bullet but different propellants. No pressure either, even at 3200+ though I don't load for that in competition.

I guess all the other 6XC contributors have abandoned us for other sites. Seems alot of the other participants I used to see here have either moved elsewhere or just don't bother to post any longer. I've seen great results around 3,020. so far with Scenars and 2,965. with SMK's...
(28" 1:8 twist Kreiger, .236" bore)

I have two 6xc one with a schneider barrel and one with a kreiger they both are 1-7.5 twist @ 28in. they both like 2950 for speed with 107 smk but the new 105 amax AMP shoots like a lazer beam and I dig the price!!
