6X47L Brass Prep

I had a 6.5X47L made with a .269 neck OD, thus requiring neck turning, which I do any way. I purchased a Redding S-Type neck die set that has the neck sizer, body die, and seater. The neck sizer I purchased will not resize the entire neck. I am new to the forming of brass other than the Ackley method, but not new to reloading. I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with.

Do I turn the necks before or after resizing?
What do I need to size the entire neck?
How much clearance do I need in the neck area?

Thank you for your help.

I shoot 1000 yard bench rest with my 6x47L and I must say it does VERY well. I pay attention to my brass and this is how I do mine.

I full length size new brass down in one operation. I use a Forster FL die but your Redding im sure is doing a fine job.
Once you fire form them your die should size the entire neck.

After resizing I turn the neck to just remove the high spots. My 6x47L is a .272 so I cant take off a bunch but do get them to about 80% clean in less than a .001 removed leaving me at .269 or just over. Lapua brass is really nice. It doesnt take much to clean it up.
Your .269, if I was doing it would be turned to .267 loaded round and that would clean them 100%.

Then load them and fire form them.

After fire forming I then turn the necks 1 more time at the same setting as before to just remove any irregularity.

Thats it.

IMO .002 is plenty of clearence but some go twice that. Its up to you.

I my self wouldnt go closer than .002

Ryan,

Thank you very much for the information. I have the Laupua brass on hand and a Forster F/L die on order. Again, thank you for your help.

wildbill1- i run an expander die thru my brass at 6.5 and go ahead and turn it at 6.5. then neck size it with the 6mm die. i seem to get less run-out right from the start by doing it that way. just as info. bill

Bill brings up a good point I didnt mention.
I also use an expander on my brass before I turn it so they all fit my mandrel smoothly. The only reason I chose not to do it before I resized was that I like to turn it after forming and that would mean having 2 turners or constantly resetting the 1 turner. I never saw the need to do it first. Some day I should do a side by side test.

Hey Ryan, I tried it twice in a row with 20 pcs. of brass and was able to detect straighter necks right from the start. I could not detect anything different in my technique nor methods except for the size at which I turned the necks. Might be worth the effort to give it a whirl. Please let me know if you happen to see a difference. Thanks, Bill
