6X47 Lapua 1-12 is Stacking

Update on the 12 twist 6X47 -

Quickly becoming my favorite varmint set up with 70 grain Varmegeddons.

Speed was about 3560 at 70ish rounds, haven't checked it since. I thought the XLR chassis would be conducive to running a thermal, and I'm sure it is, I just don't care for it. I'll be swapping it to a MCS PHA soon. but this set up at 23" is solid. Fast, flat, and zero runners. I suspect it will wind up just north of 3600fps. Peterson brass has been great. Longest shot so far with it was 379 - point and shoot. Zero about an inch high at 100 with an Iray TH50C. I hit the 379 a little low, he spun a while before the lights went out, Probably should've aimed a little higher but still would've been on hair either way. Really loving it.

12 twist has become my favorite, even in BR work with 68 grain bullets. Won a national championship grand agg with that combo, so it's not very broken. Overall, I find them just ever so slightly better than the more common 13.5-14 twists used for that work. I didn't come to that conclusion overnight though. It was over several barrels in high level br competition. Both can still win and any difference either way is small. Not much earth shattering left to do, it seems. The flip side is that I won two 200 yard national championship aggs with 80's in 12 twists. I think the 80's have a very slight edge at 200 and beyond. But again, nothing earth shattering and just perceived small advantages there too. I don't see a down side and I like the ability to shoot 80's in one vs being locked into 68ish bullets in a 13.5-14 twist.

Bottom line...I'm staying with 12 twists though.

The 6X47 is a great cartridge for both Varmints and a little large game. That and the 6 GT are both very versatile cartridges. I have four 6X47s set up with different bullets and they all shoot really great. Easy to tune, wide range of powders available and pleasant to shoot. I think you have a real winner, especially with the 70 Gr bullets. Barts 80 Gr Dominator is the lightest bullet I'm using but nothing wrong with good 70S for Coyotes and other Predators. Enjoy...

I have 1000 80 grain Dominators I intend to do a 6BRA with down the road. Those bullets are awesome. This particular one, I wanted as much max point blank as I could get so the 70's won out in this particular case.

Nice to see a few 12 twisters in 6x47 L out there. I had Kelbly’s chamber me one on an Atlas single shot w/Krieger HV 1-12” @28” last year. My first custom action except for an old 70’s DGA. Woohoo! About time at 69 years old.Put it in a Revelation 3” BR stock, prepared to drill a hole for the mid-action 3rd screw and bed, but of course, I had to go shoot it!

Wow is all I can say! N150 and 70gr Speer TNTs for starters punched tiny round holes with the first load I tried. An unsung bullet for sure.Peterson brass. Thanks to Kelbly’s for a timely great job; yes I love my 6x47! Only my 2nd 6mm other than my 722 in 244. That 1-12” shot 100gr Norma Oryx into good groups @ 3000fps with the first load of 40 year old IMR 4831 I tried .

Honored to be here learning from all you nice and knowledgeable folks! 80gr Berger varmint next now that I got my heart patched up!

80 Berger V is a fantastic bullet. Report your findings!

I built a 10tw 6x47 Lapua as I had a good bbl in that twist for coyotes a few years ago. I want to say I was planning on using the 88gr Berger VLD varmint, but after having to bush the bolt (Winchester action) and installing a DBM unit on it so everything worked properly, I never got back around to playing w/ it as I had already moved on for some reason…it was also very accurate, 1/2 MOA w/ about anything I shot in it. I loaned it to a friend for awhile and he found the same…. I should get an arca plate mounted on that forend and get it set up for next season.

I did some extensive testing / hunting with the 88 in a 1-9 6GT. The one in my profile pic actually. Super accurate bullet. Regularly shot sub .25 with it. It hated wind though. I never had an issue with runners, but it wasn't very explosive unless I hit bone with it. That being said, I have a buddy in Amarillo shooting them in a 1-8 6X47 and its his favorite combo for coyote hunting - and he says it ain't close. I think you need that 1-8 for that bullet to perform like a varmint bullet. Everyone I know that's tried them in a 10t had mediocre results. A guy that I regularly hunt with had a 700 LA sittin around and he's doing a Catbird specifically for that bullet. It should be a cool rig.

One of my favorite night rigs is the 6x6.8 shooting 70 Ballistic Tips at 3300 in my 20" AR with a 10" twist. Great performance with less than 30 grains of powder, & hell on wheels for coyotes. Adding another 300 fps with the 47 has to up the giggle factor.

On another note, I've never been a fan of shooting light bullets in quick twists, but I had to try the 70's in my 18" 6x47 Lapua with an 8" twist for the off chance I wanted to pack it at night. I found a great node at 3300 that will hover around 1/2 MOA.

Now the brass I used for the 70's was originally from my 30x47 made from 308 Lapua LRP that I necked down & turned. In a side by side test, the LRP brass actually out shot the SRP brass by a hair. Something to think about if you have any LRP brass laying around that you want to repurpose.

If you can get them to shoot, the 87 grain Vmaxes are lightning bolts on coyotes, just sayin.

My 6x47 is an 7.5 twist, I shoot 87-109 grain bullets. A slower twist does sound interesting though.
Couldn't get "Repeatable Group's" from, the 87 gr. V-Maxes in my 1-7.5 twist,.. But, the 95 Berger Classic Hunters, at, 3,100+ fps "HUM" in my 6 XC and shoot, 5 shot, One Hole, group's,.. in the .3's,.. "repeatedly".
Gave the rest of my V-Maxes to, my grandson for his, 1-10 twist .243 Win Tikka and they shoot Great, for Him !
The 87 V-max, is Perfect for, 1-10 or, 1-12 Twists ,..IMO !
