6x45mm - what yall think?

What can yall tell me about the 6x45mm?

223 necked up to 6mm...

Im looking for a new AR round for shooting hogs and deer.

This rifle will be and 18 inch lighter weight barrel and adjustable stock to shorten up the length of pull.....

I've never shot this cartridge. I kinda figure it'd be a little laser for inside 100 yards. I NEED NEED a cartridge that has VERY little felt recoil. I know if I go to a heavier bullet it will add recoil..

Im thinking flat base bergers... as berger is my go to bullets.

OR ---- a 30 major (30 Grendel) but i donno what a light weight 30 cal would feel like in an AR..

I have four AR's and a bolt gun in the 6X45. I've shot them for years in 3Gun and Police Sniper matches and on prairie dogs. I've won a ton of Gold with them. One of the easiest bump up from the 223's It will do the trick for you. I've also got a 30 Major on an AR that runs well. I haven't shot it a ton but it will give you a nice thump on target.

If I was going to a 30 for hogs I'd go for the American 30 that is basically a modified rimless 30 Herrett. It runs great and performs like a souped up 30-30 on steroids. It's been used to kill elk and mules deer for several years up in Washington and Oregon. I helped design it and it hammers hogs down in Texas according some of the guys that have tried it out. Merely a neck up and shortening of the 6.8 SPC case. Easy peasey.

I like mine. Its a bolt action. I shoot 58gr vmax. I built it for coyotes but got into suppressed shooting for predator hunting. When i had the rifle built i did not have it threaded since no need at that time. Then gunsmith retired before i had him thread it. There is not much recoil difference from a 223. Its a smooth shooter. I would not hesitate to build one. But what i did learn is watch what primers you use for the first firing. I get misfires with cci 450 untill cases have been fired once and stretched to my chamber.

The most underrated caliber there is. Hits coyotes hard, very very accurate, shoots light bullets fast, shoots heavy bullets at good speeds, and about as easy of wildcat to make as there is.

68 grain Bart’s Avengers or 70 Nosler BT.

Bergers little match bullets are known to not expand.

Benchmark is a decent starting place.

I built one 35 years ago on a Rem 600 action. One of the easiest rounds to create accurate ammo. Almost everything shoots well. 55gr NBTs and 55gr NBT lead frees work wonderfully for coyotes. 58gr Vmax a tenth or or more accurate than the NBT. So NBTs for hunting Vmax for paper.

Sorry, not a fan of 6's for big game. Bad experiences back in the 1960s. Probly more a problem of poor quality bullets. We've come a long way in 60 years.

Down here in the central tx deer arent big game. Your're lucky to get 30-35 lbs of meat off one.

It dont take much. 99% of people overkill em caliber wise.

It’s my silhouette mouse gun, 8twist barrel,105vld stay sub MOA out to 500 meters and knock over a 60# piece of steel regularly. With a hunting bullet should be more then effective on mid sized animals under 300 yards.

6x45 is accurate and easy to reload with great bullet selection from mid 50gr to low 80gr. Since you are using an AR15 platform then mag length (2.26”) will be your limiting factor is bullet selection. Most bullets under 80gr will fit, but the 80gr-85gr bullets might not all fit. Flat based bullets in 80gr class will work..

6TCU is basically a 223AI necked up to 6mm. With the 6TCU, you gain an additional +100fps over 6x45. There is also the added advantage of a distinctly different cartridge shape that easily distinguishes it from a 223/5.56.

If you step up in cartridge size, such as the Grendel / ARC series, you gain some additional velocity but also increase recoil. 6ARC would be the easy step if you wanted to go faster.

If you move into 6.5mm or .30 caliber then bullet weight jumps into 100gr-125gr projectiles, which means recoil increases. 6.5 Grendel or 300 HAM’R.

The far left (.223 55gr VMax) and 2nd left (6x45;62gr VMax). The 3rd Left is 6x45AI (same as 6TCU), which I have loaded long for bolt rifle..
Note: Cartridges 1-2 are practically indiscernible. The Ackley Improved case (#3) is easily distinguishable.

The center two (#4-5) are Grendel cartridges is 6mm ARC (108gr ELDM) and 6.5 Grendel (123gr ELDM).

The last two cartridges (#6-7) before the .308 Win are the 300BO (125gr TNT) and 300 HAM’R (125gr TNT).

The 6.5 Grendel and 300 HAM’R are shooting same weight class of bullets at approximately same velocity. Grendel has better BC, whereas 300 HAM’R has greater bullet selection (100gr-150gr) that still fit within AR mag length. Not sure there is any advantage for 30 Grendel over the 300 HAM’R, which has factory brass, ammo, dies, and AR barrels available. My 2 cents .

The 6x45 with a 95gr Partition works great on deer! Like Jeff said above it kills far above its weight class and it's a pleasure to shoot too.

You’ve probably seen/heard this before but Dave Sink built me a 6X45 on a 700 action. Perfect for the small farm I hunt in ND. Took my second biggest deer ever with a 85gr Partition.
