6x45 build problems

Striper Slayer

Silver $$ Contributor
Hello!
My brother and I recently purchased a couple of AR Stoner 6x45 barrels from Midway. We built the uppers and
neither of us have been able to get our guns to pick up a round out of the magazine when firing. It picks up a round fine when we work the charging handle, but not when firing. It seems like the bolt is not cycling back far enough to strip the round out of the magazine.
The only thing we have in common for the build is the barrel and gas block so we figured the gas block must be the problem, but after switching gas blocks on my brothers he still has the same problem.
We have tried several different magazines and a couple different lowers with no luck.
What should we try next? Lighter buffers? Springs?
Anybody dealt with this before?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you are running loads within the load data given and not loading them under pressure, It sounds like a gas problem. What is the length of your gas system? Does the bolt lock back after the last round is fired? Does the spend round eject? What is your buffer/ spring setup? These questions will help us better understand your situation.

Dan

If your gas block is relatively easy to remove, you can check to make sure your port hole is the correct diameter for your gas length system.gas port.PNG

Our loads started out in the middle of the load data and then we moved up to heavier loads, just to the point that we have started seeing pressure signs. The rounds do eject ok, but the bolt dies not lock back on the, last round with any magazine, and we have tried several.
The barrels have a rifle lenght gas system.
We both have the factory buffer and springs that came with the lowers. Rifle buffers.

With a 20" at .750 diameter, it looks like you should be between .093-.096" on your gas port hole. Verify this before changing anything. If that is correct. Make sure the port hole is properly aligned with the gas block. There should be a slight gap between the block and the larger diameter on the barrel.

The hole is .093. We have tried realigning the gas block a couple times with no luck.

It sounds like everything is right where it needs to be to operate correctly. With a little bit of use(wear) it might improve but that's not good enough in my book. It wouldn't hurt to try a light weight buffer. Can you confirm that the buffer spring is in fact correct. It should have between 41-43 coils. Any more than that would be an issue.

I will check that. Haven't counted the coils.

There is one other scenario. We haven't discussed your loads at all. I had a chance to talk to a buddy who is a gunsmith and he mentioned that you can get into case pressure but still not cycle the action if your powder is too fast. Go with a slower burning powder that will still have sufficient pressure at the gas port. A faster powder will bleed off too much by the time it gets to the rifle length gas port causing a short cycle. This could be your problem since mechanically your rifle sounds within specs.

At some point in time you need to tell the AR15 savvy here what powder, what charge weight, what bullet.

223 based 6mm you'll need to increase charge weight significantly and/or one step quicker on powder to get to the same pressure on a similar bullet weight to the 223.

Got a buddy with a 6x45 AR shoots my old 6x45 PD loads just fine, 58vmax and H335.
Charge weight is over 27g. See Hodgdon online manual or Western Powders manual for guidance.

I used 27 and 27.5 grains of exterminator with a 55 gr8 nosler bt. Also tried 25 grains of exterminator with a 65 gr hp.
I think my Bro was shooting 27 grains of h335 with a 65 gr hp. (i am out of town right now so this is all from memory. If they are way off don't shoot me) I have some cfe223 and 4895 I can try next weekend.
