6SLR progress

I've been messing around with my 6slr for about a month. I built it using a 34" eight twist heavy palma with the intention of using h1000 and 105 burgers. I tried many ways to get this combo to shoot but would always get unexplained fliers. Finally I switched to h4831ssc and quickly settled on a load of 44.9gr behind a 105gr vld. I shot four 3 shot groups today that averaged 0.217". Dont know what the velocity is running. Anyone else using h4831?
Dave

I spoke to Robert Whitley (6SLR designer) when I put mine together a few years ago. He told me his go to powder was 4831SC.

I did try H1000, but my experience was similar to yours and I've stayed with H4831SC. BTW, mine is a 7.5" twist and I'm using 115 DTACs

I did a search here. Over and Over 43.5gr of H4831SC came up as being the shooters go to load. Now I don't know about you, but when I see the same load coming up in a huge cross section of rifles across the USA, that kinda tells me something.

105gr Hybrid/ Winchester cases/ Tula Primers (KVB7) H4831SC, at right around 3090FPS. Low pressure as well. I went 5 reloads before I need to FL size brass. That also speaks volumes to me.

Also the guys that won the Long Range Regional this last weekend use N160.

Just something to think about.

I started out with 43.5gr of h4831ssc but was still getting fliers. I went up in 0.2gr at a time and finally settled on 44.9gr. I'm using lapua brass turned to 0.0125" neck wall thickness and Wolf LR primers. My brass shows no sign of donuts. Primers do not show excessive pressure. This was my first try at using a 0.236" bore barrel and it might be a little harder to tune than a 0.237". Anyone have a similar experience?
Dave

I'm running 43.8 of H4831 at 2890fps. It's shoots just under a 1/4". I got pressure signs at 44.2. I'm doing some testing with H1000. I did a charge test and 46.4 shot really well running 2950fps. Loaded up 50 more to do some LR testing if the rain ever stops.

I' ve tried many combos but H4831sc & IMR7828 have been the best with
105-108 pills! WW No-neck turn brass CCI BR primers! Bartlein barrel finished st
30" I had mine throated for 115 DTACS but have never used them as the performance
Has been excellent with the lighter pills.

Russ, do you know the magic number for N160 with 105 hybrids?

Sorry I do not. I can ask though if I remember. Hope all is well.

all is well thanks. I am waiting for my gunsmith to get his 6SLR reamer back from PTG and then my Quadlite goes in to get converted from 6BR. The 6SLR is one of the few reamers that Eric doesn't have or otherwise I would have tried to fit it in his schedule.

43.7 was my most accurate go to load for 4831sc with coated 105-108s and win brass. 3030 out of a 28". I later tried 7828ssc and found 44.6 to get my node at 3125...again coated bullets and win brass. I didn't see any real promise with 4831 in the 44-45 range.... but like you did not see pressure.

Now I'm playing with lapua 308 Palma and LRP brass necked down and neck turned to just under .014. During my first firing I stayed a few tenths under my two go to loads. I now am ready to test with the new brass to see if small primers work any better than large....

does anyone know the neck thickness of Winchester brass? I was told .270 bushing works for Winchester and that would roughly work out to .012"

Try RL26 you'll be surprised.

Very little testing with 7828SSC. Got some hard numbers and then shooting season came on quick so I set aside my H1000 and IMR 7828 Testing while going back to good ole H4831SC.

Not enough testing to give you a good shakedown. Sorry.

I'm not at home right now, but I think I am using a .270 bushing in my Whidden die.
