6PPC vs 6mmAR

I know the 6PPC rules and the 6mmAR is made for AR style rifles but has anyone tried the 6mmAR in a benchrest style bolt gun? It is the Lapua 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm. It will push 105gr bullets around 2700-2750fps in gas gun and probably faster in bolt gun. Might do good in 600yd matches.

Built a mimmic of the 6AR Turbo 40 for a bolt gun. It has a turned neck. Shows a lot of promise, still need to revisit the freebore length.Powder cap. is right there with the 6 BR ,with a PPC boltface. Now I can run 6PPC,30 Major,& 6 Big Mouse on the same rig. Point blank to 600 yd. with only a barrel change. Just got to remember to tighten the nut on the end of the stock!!!!

I have been shooting a 6mmAR match rifle across the course for about 6 years. Mine is the straight 6mmAR, not the Turbo, or the Ackley improved, etc. etc. IMHO it is very nearly the best ATC match rifle cartridge out there. I shoot the 87 Hornady bullet at 200, the Berger 108 BT at mag length for 3 rapid, and the Berger 105 Hybrid at 6. The 87 shoots very very well for OH and is low recoil for sitting. The 108 for 3 rapid is not loaded hot, but really bucks the wind, and frequently gives me cleans when .223 shooters are getting a couple blown wide from a wind change. The Berger 105 hybrid gives me about 2750fps for 600, and if a fabulous bullet. All of these loads shoot 1/2 MOA (and maybe a little better). If I can't win with this cartridge, it sure isn't because of the cartridge... The straight 6mmAR is also simple to prep. and the brass is terrific; Lapua 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm. It shoots very well on the first loading. Pretty hard to beat.

Look up, 6mm RAT, 6 FatRAT, 6 SRB, 6 Dune. People have been using it for years. Jerry Sharrett is one guy that I know of shooting it at 600 benchrest.

Fundamentally, it's a 70 thou long 6 PPC. Case capacity is going to be between the 6 PPC and the 6 BR.

The other thing that it gets you is the PPC boltface.

There are a bunch of us shooting the 30 cal version, the 30 Major, in 100-300 score benchrest. Great little cartridge.

+1 to everything mgx1138 said. I simplify it one more step and shoot 90 Bergers at 200-300, and 105 JLK's at 600. Velocities are right on par with the info that Robert Whitley provides on his site. This is about as close to a turn key operation as I've ever seen. Snap on your new upper, load, shoot, clean, repeat. It really is that simple.
i hope this helps,
Lloyd

I have been shooting a straight 6mm AR since 2007, and I usually just ran 27.3 grains of H4895 with all of the bullets. Not very complicated, and it all worked great.

Does someone know of a site that lists all the 6mm cartridges designed for the AR?

I shoot a 6mmAR and I absolutely love the thing. Recoil isn't an issue, the brass seems to last a good while, limitless quality 6mm pills, and it feeds very reliably. It was a toss up between the 6mmAR and the 6WOA before I purchased, but I got a great deal on a turn-key 6mmAR set up and looking back I'm glad I went that route. In my opinion, the 6mmAR can do everything the 6WOA can do, but it can also handle the 105/107 class bullets and has much better brass. I was strongly considering building a bolt gun with the 40* version, but just decided I would re-barrel my AR with a Fat Rat or T40 barrel when the time comes.

Nothing in 6mm has been standardized or produced by a big outfit in AR's that I'm aware of - at least not one that's been popular. People have come up with their own wildcats in 6mm from a variety of different parent cases - some require fireforming while others do not. Some of the cartridges are very similar, but have small intricacies in the reamer that makes them different (ie 6mmAR vs 243LBC, 6mmAR Turbo 40 vs 6 Fat Rat vs 6 Rat). I'm not aware of a website that lists all of them in any great detail, largely because a lot of them are direct competitors with each other. 6mmar.com has some great information on the 6mmar and the improved versions, as well as the 6mm Hagar. Other than that, you'll just have to search and read. The nice thing is there are a lot of comparisons between the cartridges on forums, so you'll quickly read about different variants of cartridges in the 6mm caliber. I'm sure other members on here have some other websites with information about the other cartridges that I'm not aware of.

Has anyone used this 6mmar in a bolt benchrest gun for 100 and 200yd? Is it as accurate as the 6ppc? I am just wondering as the brass prep is som much easier.

Thanks

I support the 6mmAR and know i will like it over the 6mmARC because of the shoulder length and the plentiful 6.5 Grendel brass. I have a Shilen bolt gun in 22PPC and i will go 6mmAR on it soon. I have Whitley’s upper with a 26” barrel and it is terrific OTC. My kneck and lower back do not like offhand any more, so i will shoot it prone in local matches and keep my 6BR and others for long range. It shoots great in mid-range for me

A 6 Grendel shines in a good bolt action BR rifle. Custom sizing dies are optional, as I just use a smaller bushing in a 6.5 Grendel Redding type s full bushing die that works well with my reamer specs.

Most people use a wilson inline type seater, in which case you can just run the chamber reamer into a ppc seater and you then have your seater.

The cartridge works very well and it just makes a lot of sense.
