6ppc neck tension?

I am just starting testing with my new bruno 6ppc. I am going to use my .260 neck bushing to start with. Is.260 a bit to loose as a rule? should i start with a bit more tension say a .259?? Thanks Lee

Lee: Answers to a couple of questions are necessary: (1) What is your loaded round neck diameter? (2) What is the chamber neck diameter? Example, for my "old" .262" neck dia. 6ppc, (gone now, replaced with a .272" chamber neck), chamber neck dia = .262". Loaded round neck dia. = .260". Bushings used were .258" for newer brass and .257" when it began to get work hardened, after approx. 15 to 18 loadings.

JUST A Thought . . . A LEE FACTORY CRIMP DIE not only straightens the bullet in the case, but allows the bullet to gain a little pressure before entering the lands and grooves. This die will permit anyone to become a more accurate shooter with no other exotic "modifications." Cliffy

My chamber is a .262 I should have mentioned that. My loaded rounds are measuring .260 so i guess i am not really putting any tension on the bullet. I didnt know if this was a common practice with the 6ppc. Just starting out with it. The fella at sinclairs told me this was one of the best selling bushings for the .262 chambered 6ppc?? I dont know!!!! Thanks Lee

Lee: Not trying to beat a dead horse, but your dimensions are a duplicate of my .262" chamber. I was outside neck turning to a .0085" neck wall thickness, loaded round neck dia. of the same .260", and the .258" bushing was my "standard". Used that combination for over 10 years, trouble-free. That's a good chambering, nothing wrong with it, I just got tired of trimming off all that nice Lapua brass, and decided to go with a thicker case neck wall ( trimming to .013" now), for the .272" chamber neck. Always seated with my Sinclair arbor press and a Wilson chamber seater die, but just bought another Forster Ultra Micrometer benchrest seater die and plan on some side-by-side comparisions to see for myself if one type seater is better than the other. My most consistantly accurate bullet in my 6ppc has always been the 68 gr. Berger #24411, with N133 powder, Federal 205, seated to touch. Have fun with your 6ppc, I certainly am.

I think you will find that the Forster seating dies to be of very good quality. I have a couple of them and the seat my bullets very very straight. Thanks for the info!! Lee

Lee: I did not mean to imply that the 6ppc Forster seater was my first one: been using them for years, have them for most all my cartridges now. My only "complaint" is the difficult to read settings, but at $25 less cost than the "green" one, they still are my first choice. Comparing other cartridges seated with the Arbor press/Wilson seaters versus the Forster's, have never found an accuracy advantage to either, will now have the opportunity to compare the 6ppc.

let me know what you find out. I personally feel like the forster seater is every bit as good as the wilson. I like them both equally. I havent ever did a side by side comparison for the same chambering. I have measured runout of both types of seaters and they both were spot on. Lee

If you want the best setup make a die from your chamber reamer and use your arbor press. wilson and forster seater are very generous on there dimensions.....jim

What powder are you using. 133 will require more tension than, say, 322.

.260 is too big. The bushing size is indeed powder dependent......also dependent on the amount of annealing in the neck. Buy .256 thru .259 and EXPERIMENT.

A Lee factory crimp die on a 6 PPC used in a full blown comp rifle?.........that would be Heresy! :'(
Wilson In-line seaters used in conjuction with Skip's shims are the norm in point blank BR................so simple.....a caveman could use them. ;D
