6ppc neck size?

I’m having my first a 6ppc built. My question is the .262 still the preferred chambering. Or is something else being used. Thanks, Jim

0.269 has become popular in recent years. The necks don't get dinged so easily and easier to turn the necks. IMHO either can be equally accurate.

Most of the top 6PPC shooters have moved away from .262 necks and moved to .268 and some to .269 necks. I don't think any have claimed better accuracy but neck turning is much simplified. Case necks are not as fragile and some claim more consistent neck tension because of thicker neck walls. This is based on using Lapua 220 Russian brass.

No this is an old thread. But, is there a definitive answer to this question? What is more accurate? .262, .268 or something else.

I ask because I have .262 necks but am considering rebarreling.

Thanks

The neck size does not determine accuracy. I have both .262 and .269 barrels and one is not better than the other. I personally prefer the .269 so neck turning is quicker but that is the only reason.

Neck size does determine accuracy- as the brass gets older the thinner necks do not have as much tension. And like one guy says “i want all the bullet hold i can get”

Ok Dusty. I see you agree with Fguffey.

So are most of the top shooters now using no or light turn necks?

Any top shooter will turn their necks. All you gotta do is turn one to see they need it. I like around a 268nk. Plenty of brass left and 100% turn. More bullet holds.

OK, after reading this thread, it seems to me that the next logical question, is why turn the neck at all, if the diameter of the neck does not make an improvement in accuracy?

Nick, from what I have read, turn some to “clean up” the inconsistencies of the neck. If you do a very light turn, you will see where some material is removed while in other places the turner will not touch the neck.

You have to turn any neck to make them the same all around. Different thicknesses lead to different tensions (or holds for some of the audience)

I understand the unifying the neck part. I am currently shooting a 6PPC with a 262 neck. Why turn to that specific diameter.

The 262nk was a result of brass back in the 90’s that was so bad you had to turn it to .0087-.0085 just to get it to clean up. If you have a 262nk chamber you must turn your brass to even go in the chamber and you have to go past .262 to provide bullet release clearance

I was taught that if you seat the bullet into the lands, (and I think most benchresters do) neck tension is a non issue cause the bullet is in a hard touch anyway. Is this true? What do you all think?

It matters less at a jam. As brass nears its end of life during a match some will lose tension- you can feel it during seating. Those will not go in the hole so it still matters
