6PPC Distance

I have two, 6PPC's. I purchased them both used and do not have a boatload of info on either rifle. I do know that one of them was shooting quite well at 100 yards with Bart's 68 grain flat base bullets. That rifle checks out to be a 1 in 14.5" twist. The other one I have no info as to what bullets it prefers. I checked the twist and it is 1 in 14". I am hoping to get one of these to shoot out to 300 yards @ some local shoots. I am not at this point expecting to shoot with the pros at big names shoots. I'm not ready for that and I realize I don't have the optimum in equipment. My question is can I realistically expect to get this combo shooting 1 to 2 MOA @ 300 yards? I currently have a Leupold 36X target scope on one rifle and a Leupold 45X Comp series on the other. I must admit to liking a challenge, but I sure don't want to expect the impossible.

In the past many benchrest matches were shot at 100, 200 and 300 yards. The PPC can handle 300 easily. The flat base bullets are not too good in windy conditions, but if you work on reading the wind and firing fairly quickly you can do great at 300 yards.

We had a 6PPC take one of our 500 yard match wins in fairly calm weather. If conditions get up they are not a preferred tool, but my point is the accuracy is there.

You can shoot some real good groups at 300yards or more...
Just keep in mind the load that shoots good at 100yards may not shoot well at 300yards, you mat have to tweak your load some to get it shooting well at 300..but you could expect to shoot .500 to .750 groups at 300yards if you have a good rifle..don't be surprised if you shoot .300..

You should be fine with it. If conditions (wind & mirage) are bad for you they are bad for the other shooters in your match too. If you practice in these conditions after you get your loads developed it will help relieve the "panic" of having to deal with them under the pressure of competition.

In the matches I shoot we routinely shoot at 100, 200, 300, & 400yds. While you are working on load develpment it would be my advice to try some boat tail bullets in that thing. Try the Precision Ballistics 68gr Boat tails would be a place to start. And don't let anyone talk you out of trying boat tails except your rifle. If it don't like em, it'll tell ya. WD

I agree on trying boat tails i have a 6ppc barrel that loves them at 300yds and use them for shooting ground hogs

With your [barrel] twist rates, you'll likely find the best performance via [custom] bullets based upon the .790" long jacket - especially with BTs via your 14.5" twist barrel. Contrary to contemporary practice, you should stick to bullets with a maximum length of about 0.810". Generally, this [length] will equate to bullets weighing 65/66 Gr. - for 6mm bullets, the addition of a BT increases twist rate requirement by about 1/2 inch! RG

OK and thanks. It can never been said that I am not one eager for knowledge. So now I have more questions. How is this figure arrived at in order that I may apply it to other calibers? (I have a couple of .223's I want to tune also.) Keep in mind that advanced mathematics was my poorest subject way back when. My .223's have 1 in 9" twist rates and am curious if any of the lengthier VLD styles are worth trying? I plan to own a 1 in 7" .223 or perhaps a 6br after I learn a little more about this sport. I did measure some of the bullets I have on hand for the 6PPC. I actually have quite an assortment from owning .243's and one 6PPC Kimber Ultra. My flat base 68 gr. Bart's Ultras measure .838", Sierra 70 gr. HPBT Match are .836", and Nosler 70 gr. Solid Base HP Match are .832. I know from the previous owner of the 1 in 14.5" twist rifle that the Bart's were working well. I am sure that there may be better calibers than what I have, but I am retired and don't have unlimited money for fun. I also want to shoot something that is not a short barrel life caliber. I got my project on the 1 in 14.5" twist to the point of test firing yesterday. This rifle will be shot by my wife, so I got things ready and let her get behind it. It was cold here in the frozen tundra and we set up in the back yard instead of going to our range. We can only shoot 35 yards here, the winter woodpile being our backstop ;D Basically just wanted to "get it close" on paper. Her first shot was about 1" low and 1" left of the aiming point. Close enough for now. After she fired the second shot, there was no apparent hole on paper anywhere. It was determined that the second shot passed perfectly through the first. She fired one more and it widened the hole slightly. Not 300 yard shooting, but very happy with her shooting and the rifle for now. We will move up to the 100 yard mark when the weather improves. Until then I can load some tuning rounds.

I wish someone would tell my rifle that the 100 yard load i use isnt supposed to shoot well at 300 yards. LOL!! Lee
