I am wanting to get a 6mmBR made us for use on Prairie dogs/varmints only, and not for any bench matches. Know absolutely nothing about what I should look for in a weapon that will serve this purpose. So I am asking you fellas out there,what your reccomendations would be, and what I should consider for this gun. I do think that I want a muzzle brake, a single shot action, min. SAMMI standards on the chamber, a synthetic stock, weight is not a problem either. I read that this gun really shines with use of 65-75 gr. bullets. I mainly want to shoot varmint/ballistic tip type bullets, and not anything solid. So guys, give me your input and help me with this decision. Once I learn my way around this site, I look forward to your help and possible any smiths that you may reccomend. Thanks fellas.

I had a Remington 700 Varminter in an HS Precision stock that needed the 22-250 barrel replaced. I sent it to Pac Nor and had them install a barrel the same contour as the Varminter barrel. It was 24 inches in length, no turn .272 neck, and 1 in 12 twist. This outfit weights 9 1/2 pounds and shoots half dime size groups using Varget or 748 powder pushing 55 grain blitzking or 58 grain VMax bullets. I consider it to be a perfect chuck rifle for the chuck shooting I do here in PA.

I did it the easy way with a new Remington Varmint Laminated Stock Rifle in 243 when new it was rechambered to 6mmBR 271 neck and the barrel cut and crowned at 22" but you could leave it up to 25" when the back of the chamber is cut off and the new chamber cut. the action was trued and rifle pillar bedded with the trigger adjusted the rifle shoots sum 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 55gr BlitzKings with most under 3/8" if i do my part the velocity is around 3400fps with 33gr H4895, 34gr Varget or 32gr benchmark all with Rem 7 1/2 primers and Lapua brass. when the barrel is shot out i can fit a match stainless barrel i gues in about 5000 rounds but i think i will end uo changing it when it will not hold 1" at 100 any more.

Another option is an XR100 in 22-250 sell the barrel new unfired on E-Bay and have a match barrel fitted or a Rem 700 Varmint Synthetic Stainles Fluted in 22-250.

I went with the VLS as it is the only heavy barrel 243 that Rem make and i find the laminated stock to be a better shape for use with high magnification scopes with large objective lenses. I have placed my action in a Synthetic Varmint Rem stock and it was not as comfortable.

I have a Remington VSF that is currently a 22-250 that I am having re barreled into a 6br. I am going with a 1-12 twist to shoot the 65-75 grain bullets. When my smith does the re-fit he will also be truing the action. Being left handed it has been impossible to find a used left hand short action in Canada. The VSF is a great platform to base a project on because it comes with a top quality stock to boot. I also have a second VSF that has been re barreled/chambered to 6MM Remington w/ a tight neck/ 10 twist. It is my coyote/deer gun. The BR is going to be my paper/pdog/coyote rig.

mine was done by Hart in a one in ten twist .270 neck...El Junko rem 700 adl...Hart made it shoot...I'm really happy with it..I had an old wood 40X stock & refinished it myself...epoxy bedded the action & just a couple of inches of the chamber/barrel area... free floated the barrel..I think the one in ten twist is the best to start with...All the long range benchrest guys go faster twist rates...the real varmint efficianadoes go for the 12 or 14 twist rate...I think I can get my gun to shoot the 75 gr bullets better when I put a bit more powder behind it...the 75grs do ok at 100 but the 80 & 87 gr bullets shoot better groups at 200yds & beyond..Seems the wind bucking abilty makes the diff..so far my best load has been the 87 gr v-max for accuracy at 300 yds under an inch...the longest kill was 558yds with the berger 80 gr mef hp bullet...best 100 yd group was the 88 gr berger match .299...The jury is still out as to what is best..lots of possibilities..I'd really like to get the 75 gr V-max shooting better..so far it is third place for accuracy in my gun...Hornady 75 gr HP does better with the same benchmark loads..I use Varget in the other loads...Still sorting it all out..This is the most fun rifle I have ever shot...Everyone who shoots that pip squeak cartridge is impressed..It is not fussy to load for shoots most of the loads I put together under 5/8 inch..So you know for min. of groundhog it is fine for most shots under 400 yds....mike in ct
