6mmBR or .243 Win for 600 Yard

What would be better 6br or .243 win. for 600 yd. F-Open. Remington 700 action, already have .243 dies and stuff but know the 6br may be worth the investment. What do you think? Have 7mm for 1000 yd already.

Since you already have equipment for .243, shoot it for a barrel. If you do decide you want more...whatever you think the BR can give...well, the .243 won't long be at the dinner table with your first tube! ;D

Hands-on experience with two chamberings in 243 Win.: a Douglas chrome moly and a Shilen stainless, both toast at an accurate round count of 1400. Had a new, unfired Savage Mdl 12BVSS, also in 243 (bought it for the action alone), but put 400 rounds thru it, and with my Hawkeye saw the beginning of some serious fire-cracking. Barrel was set-back & re-chambered to 6BR. A great ctg. if you "need" it, I did not. ;)

I'm a 6br man myself. I've had two .243win barrels and both shot out around 1200 rounds. I really like the reduced recoil and the extended barrel life of the 6br. Whether you should build a 6br or a .243win should depend on where you shoot and how well you can read the wind. In my opinion the 6br is a little more accurate than the .243win, but the .243win will do better in the wind because of the increased velocity. If you have never had a 6br you don't know what you are missing they are great little cartridges and they will make you learn to read the wind and pay more attention to conditions across the field. Good shooting, Brian.

The 6BR is worth the investment, If you learn how to shoot it, it will make you a better Marksman. I've borescoped a .243 with 300 rounds down it using RL25 and the firer cracking was well on it's way. The .243 will perform good, but barrel life will be short compared to a 6BR. Also the 6BR will be more accurate.

IMHO 6Br is totally sufficient for 600yrds. 105 VLD hunting will give good wind @ 600.
What kind of competition are you looking at? What are the other guys shooting? If you need more speed to compete think about BRX or Dasher.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am looking to keep the round count down on my .280 rem. barrel that I shoot in f-open at 1000yds once a month. (its a Douglas 8 contour, 28 inch long) Wanting to shoot some 600 yard events (probably f-open) and need something a little cheaper to load for but also accurate. Most of the guys I've talked to around here are shooting the 6mmbr at 600. So now I'm thinking of ordering a new Douglas #8, 28inch, 8 twist, 6br. Now the question is, no neck turn or neck turn as I don't have that equipment either?

gotflow: If you're going to use the newer blue box Lapua 6BR brass, a good no turn neck dia. is .270" or .269" if you are comfortable with that close of a fit. Anything smaller than .269" would require at least a clean up cut on the case necks. Loaded round neck diameter, out of the box is averaging .267", give or take a few ten thousandths. 6BR will get the job done for you at 600 yd., unless the wind is a problem, then the BRX would have a small advantage. I'm getting approx. 150 fps higher velocity with the BRX over the BR using the 107 Sierra MatchKings.
