6mmBR on the P-dog town

Does anyone shot the 6mmBR on the prairie dog town?? I have read a lot about shooting paper but nothing on varmints.

Jason,
I own three two 8tw and a 12tw they all shoot 75gr Vmax's pushed by H322 equally well. The 6BR has become my number one prairie rat destroyer out to 600yds. For the long range dogs I turn to one of my 6mmAI and 87gr Vmax's pushed by Varget.

Regards
RJ

This will be my first year using the 6BR. I've been doing a lot of research and decided that the 6 BR should be the perfect Prairie Dog rifle. I also shoot a .243, 22-250,.223 and a .17HMR. The .243 is great on those long shots but after 10-15 rounds it starts getting warm and I have to switch guns. With the 6BR, I'm using 10 grains less powder and getting almost the same velocity with my 75 VMAX.

If I was starting fresh, I think I would have picked an 8 twist so that when the wind picks up I could go to a heavier bullet

My 19# 6BR has to be one of my favorite p/dog rigs....the 12 twist Pac Nor on a nutless s/shot Savage action works just fine out to 750+ yds with 70 NBT or 75 V max on a mere charge of 31/BM...great cartridge for the p'dog fields...shown with Nikon 5-20...

Thanks for the pics, its nice to see what others are shooting. . I am sold on the 6BR, just have to get one ordered. I talked with the nice lady at Savage and she told me I could get the LRPV 4 shot mag. with the 8 twist.

JUEKER, my friend owns a new Savage F-Class in 6BR. It is an awesome shooting factory rifle. I was able to shoot a 5 shot group at 100 that measured in the high .3's. I am sure it would shoot better with a tuned load. I did a write up on it on my own blog,Bakersfield6BR). The only thing that it had a problem with, was ejecting the case. However, I believe this could fixed by a gunsmith.

I love the 6BR, it is so darn accurate and fun to shoot. Every time I shoot it, I am amazed. It will kill small varmints out to 1000 yards, with the right bullet, with ease. I am using the 105grn A-Max and it shoots very well out of my 1-8 twist Bartlein barrel. The 105grn A-Max shot very well out of the Savage 1-8 twist barrel too. The Savage liked a 105grn A-Max, 30.3grns of Varget and a CCI 450 primer. IMHO, I would recommend getting the Savage F-Class, Single shot 6BR over the LRPV.

You have to love the 6BR. It will shoot bullets from 60 to 105grns with a 1-8 twist barrel. It's very versatile. If you never owned one, you are in for a treat. Have fun with it and keep us posted on which rifle you choose.

I have a 6br barreled by R. W. Hart with a Hart 8 twist barrel on it. I had a 22-250 with a Hart barrel and it was a junker compared to the 6br. There is no comparison.
The accuracy of the 6br is amazing and the air time on the rodents is spectacular. I shoot a lot of ground squirrels each year and pretty much if you can spot them with a pair of 10 power binoculars they are in the danger zone. Where I shoot most of the shots are 100 to 500 yards. Once you get the burrows range worked out with the MOA hash marks on the scope they don't really have much of a chance.
They are fun to shoot and easy to load for. Very little load development is required. I spent a lot of time working with the 22-250 and got it shooting around 1/2" at 100 yards, with the 6br the first 5 shots were under a dime at 100.
You won't be sorry with the 6br.

Squirrelduster is right, very little load development to find your load. Try 29.5 to 30.5grns of Varget, 105grn Bullet and a CCI 450 primer, and I bet it will shoot very nice. I have found that most 6BR's with 30.3grns of Varget, 105grn Bullet and CCI 450 primer works very well.

The 105's will not stablize in the 10 twist. VMTHTR is right, the 95 will work very well, and I believe the have a little better BC than the 105's. You will be able to push them faster than the 105's, too.

I find the 90 and 95gr Berger bullets to shoot well in a 1 in 10" twist barrel. They are great paper punching bullets but not worth shooting at prairie dogs in my opinion. Even out of a 243AI or 6-284 running fast they don't move the dogs, just drop them in their tracks like a rimfire.........boring. For South Dakota fun you need a fragile varmint bullet.

That's exactly why I use the 105grn A-Max. Even though they're a match bullet, with the plastic tip, they expand pretty well. Not quite as explosive as a V-Max bullet, but pretty darn close. If you want a high BC bullet for varminting with the 6BR, use the 105grn A-Max. The 105grn A-Max gives you the best of both worlds, BC and expansion.

Justin, if I'm not mistaken I believe our Moderator has recommended Berger's 88gr bullet in the past for it accuracy and stated that it also expands well on varmints.

FYI,

Berger recommends a true 1:9" twist for the Berger 95gr VLDs. That said, some guys report they can get the 95s to work out of their nominal 10-twist barrels. Just don't buy a ton of bullets because it might not work. Some folks says you may have only a 25% chance of getting them to stabilize in a 6BR 10-twist -- but there are no absolutes one way or the other. Velocity, temp, altitude will make a difference.
