6mmBR no turn chamber vs tight neck chamber

Hello all. I am having a 6mmBR built and decided on a .272 chamber but am wandering if this was the right decision. I am using Lapua brass and most of my shooting will be at squirrels but may shoot paper later on. Would I see an appreciable difference in accuracy with a tight neck chamber and turn the necks vs. not turning for the .272 . If the tight neck is the way to go what size neck chamber should I go for. I have read threads about mandrel size issues so how is the right size mandrel decided. Thank you for your help.

Forget the tight neck...and don't ream primer pockets or chamfer flashholes either ;)

With the groups my no-turn, no-prep 6BR has shot at 1000 yards, my feelings on tightnecks and brass prep have changed drastically.

Definitely not worth the hassle for furry critters...

YMMV,
JB

You definately cannot fault Jason's success using no turn brass.
I'm sure jason will admit some of that is due to Lapua's great brass, it's just that good right out of the box. Jason is also a fantastic rifleman in his own right, which sure dosen't hurt either!
I personally use a .269 neck which requires lightly turning the brass just enough to clean it up all the way around.
If I didn't own my own reamer, I'd probably follow Jason's lead as far as the 6BR is concerned and opt for a no turn .272 neck.

Totally agree with JB, my gunsmith talked me into a .265 tight neck on my 6 BR it shoots good can't tell if it improved my groups. But try turning 600 cases for varmint shooting & you will change your mind about tight necks, great for BR shooting since I don't think your turning 600 cases at a time. My next 6BR PROBABLY WON'T be a tight neck

JB told you right. Wouldn't do it any other way. Lapua,.272 no neck turn is no work & lots of fun with fantastic accuracy.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your help. Going with the .272 chamber. Just need to summon the patience for the rifle to be finished.

dan 2116,

for what is worth, I have a .271 nk 6BR. Gunsmith Greg Tannel suggested .271 for no turn brass . It chambers Lapua brass with Vmax/Berger bullets easily.
1/14 twist. My loaded round is .269 at neck. Best of luck....

I have a no turn 6BR and a 6BRX no turn. Kreiger 14 TW barrels. Both shoot well under .500". I use Lapua brass turned to 0.0125". I think it was about .0135" - 0.014" out of the box? Do you use an expander mandrel before turning? It helps get the proper fit on the turner mandrel and rounds the neck a little better. The big issue when varmint hunting at distance is judging the distance and drop, wind and shooting skills. Try unturned if it shoots small groups your OK. Turning should not show any improvement. Most of us can't shoot groups consistantly small enough to see the difference. It isn't a $6000 bench gun with a $4000 scope on it. Buy a laser range finder and create a good drop table.

There's your answer right there!!
.272 is your no turn neck. ;)

its ok i am guilty for looking at older post in trying to help with current issues with my load development and brass issues especially with ones with neck turned casings, its just like bell bottom jeans, it eventually will make its way around again, lol

I like this response. Plus, you can always skim the necks later if you wish, and they will still shoot just fine in the .272 necked chamber.
