6mmbr chambering questions?

I've decided to get an action I have chambered in the 6mmbr! Here is where I am a little confused or, maybe I'm just over thinking this one. I read on this website in the 6mmbr information portion that the Lapua brass is of different size that the Remington or Norma brass. My gunsmith has a 6mmbr remington chamber reamer that is SAAMI spec so does this mean that I will not be able to use Lapua brass. Also, the Remington 6mmbr brass has a .080" flash hole where the Lapua is .059" flash hole. Will one perform better than the other?

Mike

The 6BR Rem has a shorter neck and a smaller case diameter above the extractor cut than the 6BR Norma (and it is the latter that Lapua brass is made for). Trimming the necks of the longer, fatter Lapua brass is no big deal, but if the 6BR Rem reamer is really purpose-made for Rem cases it will be too tight in the back for proper functioning with the Lapua brass. A reamer print and/or some careful measuring will tell you (or your smith) what you need to know.

Note also that lots of 6BR Rem reamers were ground with short freebores tailored to 65-68gr short-range benchrest bullets. Be sure that the freebore dimension will work with whatever bullets you're planning to shoot.

Thanks Toby! So I wasn't overthinking this question at all. On Midway USA website they state that the Rem, Lapua, and Norma brass are all the same and will work in a gun chambered for 6mmbr Rem or 6mm Norma BR. The only difference stated was the size of the flashhole and they cautioned that those chambered in 6mmbr Rem have a shorter throat area. Thanks again Toby!

Mike,
You want to get the Lapua chamber, the Lapua brass makes all the difference in he 6BR.

A friend of mine had the Rem. chamber, I used my Lapua reamer to open it up.
Lapua brass would not fit in it, now he is happy. I would only use a reamer for the Lapua, saves time, and no problems, Lapua 6BR is the BEST. Mike I can email you a print from PT&G it is #5214.

I am just getting into the 6 Norma BR thing and I ordered the Norma brass. I also ordered the redding dies from Midway for 6BR. They came today and the dies said 6 BR Rem. I tried a case in it and went in like butter. Micked the base before and after and no change. Still didn't know what to do so got on the phone to Redding. Nice people. I asked him what the diff. was between the Norma and the Rem and he said, nothing, not one thing, but that yes the neck is longer on the Norma.

The SAAMI specs are the same for the Rem and Norma 6BR (except the neck length), but accuracy shooters generally have chambering reamers ground to fit specific brass, not to conform to SAAMI specs. And reamers ground for minimum clearance using Rem brass will be too tight just above the extractor cut to fit Lapua brass.

That also means that standard FL dies may not adequately size brass that has come out of a custom chamber, since the chamber may be smaller than SAAMI specs. There are custom die makers, like the Harrells, who can solve this problem.

If you want to use Lapua you need a 6BR Norma reamer. However here is the rub.
The reamer should be specificly ground for Lapua brass which is larger at the web area otherwise you could end up with a "click" at the top of the bolt lift. Not saying you will, but you could. My advice call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool he's forgotten more about reamer spec's than most of us will ever know.

As to dies the redding 6BR Remington dies will work fine.

Mike: The die manufacturer's (like Redding & Forster) are doing a lot to add to the confusion with their labeling ident on the die boxes. I have, in my hands, the Redding type S- bushing style full sizing die, part# 77317, and it's label reads " 6mm B.R. Remington". The large red plastic box from one of my Forster Ultra Micrometer Seater Dies reads, " 6BR Rem. Part# U00037. Lapua brass is used exclusively, for over 5 yrs. now without any problems. The Remington chambering is all but obsolete now, so they would be justified in "updating" their labeling.
