6mmBr and 70gr Blitzking - coming apart

I have a 1/8 twist pacnor barrel in 6mmbr. I have tried and tried to find a good pdog load for under 500 yds. I loaded up some 70gr blitzkings over a decent amount of Benchmark. At 300 ft of elevation, they worked great, but I also cleaned after every 5 rounds or so. When I got to the pdog fields (3600 ft elevation), I could shoot 15 rounds fine, but then they all started coming apart before hitting the target. I could clean the barrel and get another 15 rounds. I'm guessing I was on the edge velocity wise.

Anyhow, now I'm looking for another option. I'd prefer to stay with a lighter bullet (under 85gr) b/c I don't shoot much past 500 yds and like the splat factor. I've tried the 88gr berger varmint bullet and not enough expansion out of the 6mmbr for me.

Never really got the 87 gr vmax to shoot that well. I only tried Varget and H4895 but never got the consistent accuracy I wanted. They barrel is deadly accurate with 88 and 90 gr Bergers, but performance on pdogs is not that great.

I hear you. The vmax seems to be hit or miss. There really is no good 90-95gr 6mm bullet for variants. We use a lot of 105 amaxes they are about as good as it gets except the supply is scarce.

Try them again & play with the seating depth a lot. I tried the 87's a few times & never showed much promise (esp compared to the 75 & 65's). Then later really got serious about trying to get them to shoot. Near the end of a box they were shooting bugholes with a stiff load of Varget in a 1-10 PacNor (I built it specifcally to shoot the 87 Vmax). I bought 500 87's the next day.

The Berger 80 Varmint will usually shoot well in any 6mm barrel with 12" or faster twist. It works well in my 6BRs and 6mm Remingtons.

I guess the 75-vmax hasn't worked for you?

How fast is your blitz going?

Also I put the elevation numbers into the Berger drop chart programme and the elevation (4000 feet) makes a bit over 100fps difference at 500yrds (just used the default .308 that came with the programme to provide an example), if you are having trouble with other projectiles; maybe in your ladder test with the blitzs there is another accuracy node that is slower at 300 feet but will be pumping at 3600ft...kinda raises some interesting questions around tuning the load though?

If the elevation is increasing velocity, why not do a little load development where you are shooting? That way you can get it dialed in for where it will be used, so the increased elevation won't be an issue.

I had similar issues with hunting loads I developed in summer losing velocity and accuracy in winter hunting season. It sucked doing load development in 20 degree weather, but it worked.

I tried the 75gr vmax and never got the consistent accuracy, same for the 87gr vmax. I was really hoping they'd work out and I may re-visit them. The 70gr blitzkings shot very well, never even thought about them coming apart at 6mmbr velocities.

I don't have the exact load in front of me, but I seldom run any hot loads. I know there were no pressure signs for the load I used and was jumping the bullet by .015 if memory serves me correctly.

I do plan on trying to reproduce the failures here in Arkansas, if I can't, it will raise an interesting issue for me. Guess I'll just have to make mult trips to the pdog fields to make sure all is good ;D

I've been told the btips have a thicker jacket, so I may try 70gr btips. Also looking at the lighter weight berger varmint bullets b/c I've read they have thicker jackets as well.

I use the Nosler Btips in 55 and 70 grains and love them. If you want splat factor they will perform. The 55's we have pushed out to 4000+ in a 6mmrem and 3800 in a 6BR with no problems (slower twists though). Give them a go. The 70's shoot well in my 8 twist as well. If the barrel is still tearing these apart it just may need more running in (migth be a little sharp on the rifling) or a couple of runs with bore paste.??

I have a 1:8 Hart and shoot nothing but 75 gr VMAX touching. It is accurate and very good splat factor. I have not shot prairie dogs we have two types of ground squirrels and it gives them serious air time.
I haven't shot it at a target in a couple years but we kill over a thousand squirrels a year and if they are under 400 yards they are in serious trouble. When I did the load workup it shot in the .2's 32.5 gr Varget.

My friend shoots those 75 vmaxes out of his 6mmAR and they sure do perform well on varmints and shoot pretty well out of his AR. I never found a load that was consistent enough for me.

As far as l can tell they preform the same as the
Blitzking out to 400 or so.They seem great in 1 in 10
and 1 in 12 twist at long range.
