I have been using my ULTRA accurate custom 6mm Remington Bench Rest Rifle on Varmints for more than 7 years now. I have Hunted and killed a lengthy list of Varmints with this fine cartridge including Rock Chucks, Coyotes, Jack Rabbits, Ravens, Prairie Dogs, Porcupines, Raccoons, Skunks, Ground Squirrels, Crows, Turtles, Magpies, Fox, Possum, feral cats, Snowshoe Hares, Badgers, Cotton Tail Rabbits and several other Varmint species to boot!
The 6mm Remington Bench Rest is in my estimation and experience simply one of the best Varmint cartridges ever devised! I rate it in the top five Varminting Cartridges of all time! I presently own more than 40 dedicated Varmint Rifles and have owned many dozen more over my 40+ years of Varminting. I presently have Varmint Rifles in calibers from 17, 20, 22, 24, 25, 270 as well as 6.5mm. A Varminter can simply hardly go wrong with a 6mm Remington Bench Rest Varmint gun - no matter what their favored discipline or Varminting preferences. I know - I have tried them all - and some of them many times over!
In my ratings I consider a whole host of factors in ranking this particular cartridge so highly! In rating Varmint cartridges I consider things like inherent accuracy, recoil, ease of reloading, finding accurate loads!), barrel heating factor, brass life, barrel life, loading costs, brass cost, powder amount, primer type etc etc etc), velocity, how flat is the trajectory?), lethality,a somewhat combined factor of accuracy, flatness of trajectory and bullet speed) along with other cartridge attributes.
The 6mm Remington Bench Rest scores VERY high in all these considerations and thus has earned its place in my high ranking, being among the top 5 all time best Varmint Cartridges!).
The one attribute this cartridge MAY lack is being readily available in a high number of factory Rifles, brands and models). I think this will eventually be corrected. Although many Varminters who want/desire the utmost in accuracy will go the with the extra effort and expense and either obtain their 6mm BR's in a Remington 40XB type Rifle or a Cooper or go full custom and have one made to their specifications!
I treasure my custom 6mm Remington Bench Rest varminter that I never shoot it at the range anymore, other than the yearly sight verifications) it is so consistently accurate and I am so happy with the load I easily and quickly worked up for it that its shot at Varmints only anymore. Even at that this Varminter has a history of making 5 shot 100 yard groups consistently,on windless days - I only do sight in and load development anymore on windless days!) in the 2's!
Now remember this is with Varmint type bullets and a Varmint type variable scope! Again I would like to stress how easily and quickly I got Varmint bullets to shoot in this Varmint Rifle! I thank the design and inherent qualities of the 6mm Remington Bench Rest cartridge! Long live the wonderful Varmint cartridge the 6mm Remington Bench Rest!

I agree 100% because I have shot several 6BR rifles that can truly humble all of us with their small little groups. The 6BR is not a real fussy caliber to get to shoot accurately, and it is soft on recoil, uses less powder, and does not burn barrels out...what's not to like. Thanks for a great thread.

I spent a lot of time messing around with .223s and have shot a half-dozen 22-250s belonging to friends. The .223s will do the job, and cheap loaded ammo is available, but for shots out past 200 yards, the 6BR really comes into its own, with much better inherent accuracy. Bigger selection of really outstanding bullet shapes, excellent brass,Lapua farms out some of its .223 production). It may not match the velocities of a 6-284, but who cares? A 58-gr V-max running 3600 fps will obliterate any small varmint, and a 75-gr V-max from a 10 or 12-twist will drop any large varmint/small preditor in its tracks. With the new .272" reamers out there and extremely high quality dies from Redding, Forster, and Harrell's, the 6BR give you a one-gun solution for everything from 50yd squirrel-popping to 500-yard shots.
