6mm Super Lr/ super x loads

Hunter

I have some load data but wont have access to it for about another month. R19 was my best powder for the 105 class bullets and R22 for the 115 Berger VLD's. H4350 and 4831SC performed well also. That seems to be a good burn rate for those weight bullets.

If you remind me later next month I can send you load data.

Hope this helps.

Hunter,

I have been working on mine for the last two weeks and this is what I've found works for my rifle. (31" 7.5 Bartlein on a Surgeon single shot action set in a McM Bros prone stock) I started with H1000 w/115dtac and could never get it to group less than an inch at 200 although the ladder test I performed looked promising at 46 grains. I then tried H4831sc w/115dtac and it really sparked at 44 grains. I shot several sub half inch 5 shot groups at 200yds and the SD/ES is great with velocity just under 3000 fps. The 44 grain load also works great with Berger 108s. I also tried Reloader 22 and 25 man it sucked in my rifle. I will be moving my testing out to 600 yds this week. I will let you know how that goes if your interested.

I know its probably just my bad luck but I have found this cartridge very finicky and hard to tune although all the reports I have read say just the opposite. Murphy hates me!!!

Good luck

I found just the oposite to be true. I have loads with N-160 and H-1000 all on a XL spreadsheet. If you send me an e-mail, I'll forward it to to you. After Robert, Russ and I were one of the first people to wring out this cartridge and unless the wind is howling, it will run with my 6.5x284 all day. You can find my e-mail on my profile. I hope this helps,

I just built myself a brand new 6SLR too. I've only taken it to the range 2 times so far and shot 60 rounds total. Shot the Berger 115's on the first trip. It did pretty good, but not great. Shot the DTACS on the second trip. It is showing some great promise with those. Good velocity and tiny groups. Now I'm anxious to shoot past 100yds with it. I'm shooting a 27" BRUX 7.5 twist cryoed barrel. I am very interested in watching the progress of this cartridge. If it will comfortably zing the 115's at 2950, what else could a guy need? I'm very happy with it so far.

Even though I made the cartridge up and sell dies for it, I cannot say I ever found it to be "finicky" as a cartridge. At this point I have had around 10 barrels chambered up in it and I will say that one of the barrels was a pain to get to shoot well, but I think that was a quirk with the barrel. I also had a barrel that was like a "shooting star", when I first got it I could do no wrong with it and it shot unbelievably well, but after about 500 rounds the accuracy just went away and no loads would work in it, even though the barrel looks great on the inside, the crown looks great, there's almost no throat wear - once again something with that barrel.

Generally speaking I have had great results with H4831SC (somewhere between 42 - 44.5 gr., depending on the barrel and whether one uses moly or not). I have a Barlein 5R 7.5 twist barrel that just goes and goes and goes with 43 gr. of H4831SC with Moly 115 Berger VLD's, and two different 7.5 twist Brux barrels that run very well with 42.5 gr. of H4831SC and naked 115 Berger VLD's, and a Schneider Polygon 7.5 twist barrel that likes 44.5 gr of H4831SC and naked 115 Berger VLD's. If I were to suggest one powder to try it would be that. For primers, the Russian Large Rifle (KVB-7) is great, whether it's Wolf, Tula, PMC, etc. and CCI BR-2's have been good too. Mostly I like the Berger 115 VLD's (stuck in the lands .012 - .015").

I had a chance to shoot my 6slr today at 600 yard using the 44 grains of H4831sc and bare 115DTAC load. I was very happy with the results. I shot one 10 shot group that measured just under 3" wide and under a 1.5" high. This was done prone F-class style. Wind was about 6-8 mph full value right to left with lots of let ups. This is the best 10 shot group I have ever shot at this range by the way with any rifle. I know this is not an earth shattering shooting but I'm happy with it. This rifle may not get voted off the island after all!

I guess they next test will be seeing how I can do prone with a sling.

Lets put that another way, you have just shot 10 V bulls consecutively in a variable wind, that's good shooting by anyones standards.

Congrats on your 600 yard shooting. Quite respectable regardless of the company you keep.
With the 6 SLR's shooting like that how in the world is my little 6xc going to stand a chance this year.

Well my gunsmith has built his I still haven't received my barrel. He chambered a kreiger he already had. With hodgon v100 and sierra 107's right around 3200fps it is shooting great. No pressure signs. At 800 yards he shot 9 shots with the first three being federal 210m primers and the last 6 being winchester large rifle standard primers. Vertical the group measured a shade over an inch. Horizontal was right at 3.5 inches with rather hard to read wind. I can't wait to get my barrel.

Still waiting for my MacLennon 6SLR barrel. He makes his own barrels in one caliber batches so the 6mm batch has to come into production before I get the notice in the mail. Will be my short range F Class rifle this Summer. Long range will be a 6.5x57AI.

In the 6SLR will be using 107 SMK, Win primers, H4350 at first. May try some slower powders later.

+1 on donuts with Lapua .243 brass. Tried partial forming with 6XC body die. More like the Grand Canyon than a donut. Tried with Win brass and got a slight donut, not as exagerated.

I just got a bunch of winchester brass to make the SLR with made a dry run to see how it worked. Nothing but junk! the shoulder and neck was fine but the should to body caved in and i wasn't even close to where i needed to be. I cut a case open and found the wall thickness was thinner than the neck thickness. pure junk.......jim

The last 6SLR I worked with was nothing but pure pleasure, after I stopped using the 243 Lapua brass and went to the recommended 243 Winchester brass. Not one single problem pushing the cases through the die, and they all came out just fine.
As soon as I have my own completed (finishing the Cedar/CF stock now ) I'll work up a load with H-4831 and the 105 A-max. I can only assume that it wont be any more of a problem than Barrys wasnt...........

Coyotehunter,
So very excited to hear what your rifle will do! Was that barrel running 3200 a 1:8twist?
I am wanting to get a pre threaded and chambered barrel for my Savage target action. I want to run with the 105-108 class bullets in a 8 twist, and maybe try a few of the 115's if they'll work.
Maybe after tax time I'll have some dough to play with this round. ;D

Keep us informed!

Thanks preacher! That Lapua brass was a real nightmare. I was surprised to find that the Remington brass performed well after some weighing and sorting. As soon as the weather warms up here in Montana I will be heading to the range to try some new loads. I bought a 'bucket' of the new Hodgdon Superformance to try in the 6SLR loads. I am also going to be trying some brand new Cutting Edge bullets with the new powder. I am really excited about the potential of the 6SLR. Thanks to RCW for this design.

So if this case forms using Winchester brass could you not turn the necks on the Lapua until they are the same thickness as the Winchester and then form them?

Has anyone tried Nosler custom brass?

A little off topic, but..

TheBlueeyedbear,
Those Cutting Edge bullets look very interesting, But, WOW, almost a buck apiece. But they say that the 100 grainers have a BC of .560. that is something!

That really got my attention too. Really looking forward to trying these new ones. The first batch I tried was just way to long for my guns. They have shortened the new 100's so I have big hope.
