6mm Remington AI accuracy

I am replacing the barrel in a Rem 700 long action to upgrade the varmint rifle I carry in the truck every day. From what I read, a 14-twist 6mm Remington AI is a good choice. I reload so brass and ammo will be no problem. I see numbers quoted about velocities, but only "accuracy is good" when it comes to accuracy. I would like to read that one can easily get .25" groups at 100 yards, but specific numbers are not quoted, only "good accuracy." The term "good accuracy" can mean vastly different things to different people. My idea of good accuracy is .25" or less groups.

So my question is: specifically, what accuracy can one expect from a 6mm Remington AI? The rifle is in a H-S precision stock already.

Thank you for your comments.

I used to shoot a 244 Ackley at 1000 yard Benchrest. It would group 1/4 MOA at 100 yards and 1/3 MOA at 1000.

But, I'm not sure you'll be able to do that with a 14 twist since that will limit you to bullets under 75 grains with low BCs. Maybe at 100 - 300 yards but probably not much farther. For those short distances there are better cartridges.

I want to be helpful but all I can come up with is the Southpark episode of Starvin' Marivin and the outreach for a star cruzer from the Pat Robertson character...

6mm AI and Truck-gun do not go together... well just because they don't go together. One: You don't need a truck gun to be like a bench gun that has .25 MOA accuracy - You're shooting off hand with a truck gun... YOU can't hold .25 MOA when shooting from a truck window. Two: a truck gun is supposed to be handy and quick... a long action 6mm AI is not the answer. There are far better choices for a truck gun... I hope so Texans chime in for practical recommendations.

Hy Gene.....(lets keep it clean..ahahah..)...There is nuthin wrong with a 6-AI...but I woood use a 8 twist bbl....no use not being abl to get the true long range value of the 105 class bullets.....the heft and length of the bbl is negotiable....whatever is convenient to carry or yield quikly is up to you....24" is good ...at the Hickory Egg shoot a cupla yrs ago there were som folks there with such a beast and scrambled the egg with ease...Roger

I agree with you about the size and weight of a "truck gun", but not the accuracy. A 1 MOA rifle is going to miss a lot of prairie dogs at 400+ yards no matter how steady you can hold. A 1/4 MOA gun makes up for a lot of holding errors.

I'm not sure he needs an 8 twist. That is what I had and it didn't shoot the mid-weight bullets (80 -90 grains) as well as I wanted. I'd go for a twist between 8 and 14, depending on how far he intends to be shooting.

Gene Pool- I have had two 6mm AI's with 1-14 twists

one was a 26" shilen, the other was a 26" Douglas, all stainless match.

I used Win Brass with Fed 210's, Win 760, and fire forming loads were 4000 fps in the Shilen and 3850 in the Douglas with less than 1/2" groups in each. Formed loads were in the 4100 fps with the Shilen(neck sized the cases only after firing) with three shot groups in the high 2's and 4050 fps in the Douglas in formed brass groups in the ..400-.500

These loads got us to 700 yards on dog towns.

As for a truck gun, your needs will vary as to your particular hunting circumstances. I used a 22/250 AI with a 24" barrel to troll for coyotes which worked well.

I learned that if I braced my right elbow on the steering wheel, turned the truck at an angle to enable me to do so, that my hit ratio was fantastic with the Peltor window bag.

Truck guns need to be extremely flat shooting since targets of opportunity present themselves quickly and the use of a range finder is limited due to the time you have to take the shot.

I had my 6mm AI reamer made with ano turn neck, zero freebore, and minimum SAAMI spec body dimensions with a throat dia of .2435.

It is hard for most people to believe just how flat shooting a 70g Ballistic tip bullet is at 4000-4100 fps and truck guns are rarely ever shot over 400 yards.

I have used many different custom and factory guns in different configurations for truck guns, two really stand out, the 22/250 AI shooting the 60g Bergers at 3700 fps, and the 244 AI shooting the 70g Noslers at 4100 fps, the reach going to the 244 AI with the 70g Noslers.

Keith nailed it for the ultimate truck gun in 6MM AI shooting 70grain BT's. That would be one deadly combo. Go with a 26 inch tube, and a no turn neck set up for Winchester brass. Personally i would opt for a 12 twist which would be great for 70-87 grain class bullets. Nice thing about the 6AI is it will be deadly accurate while fireforming and won't be a chore to fireform as you are having fun while shooting varmints.

I have 2 6MM AI's but both are 8 twist with heavy profile barrels set up for LR paper punching. Great caliber!

40xguy....

I have a 12 twist broughton laying on the rack that is going to be chambered...should stabalize the 87g V max.

A friend shoots the 80g Sierra Blitz in his 14" twist with R#19 at 3800 fps...that ought to be a hoot!
