6mm remington 85 grain Sierra

Hello everyone.
I have a Remington 600 with the short 18.5" barrel and was wanting to know whats the best powder to to use with Sierra 85 Grain BTHP. I am trying to get all the velocity I can get. Right now I am using H4350.

RE17 has been posting some impressive velocities in mid-weight bullets. It is similar to IMR 4350 burn rate but seems to send them faster.

Try some Varget with that bullet and you may have a winner. I use RL22 in my 6mm and RL 17 is also good, but that short barrel may do better with a faster powder. Mine has the stock 22-inch barrel.

I had two 600's in 6mm for my sons deer rifles, they are very accurate and will shoot 70-100 into .500 with a 4x scope and no tuning.

I found the short bbl did better with faster powders, and today would try h335, h4895

well I also have a 6mm rem in a m600. my gun just did not like the 85hpbt. I went with the 100sbt, sierra gamekings. It loves them. I tried ime4064, 4895, varget, and imr4350. I thought for sure that one of the faster powders would shoot better in the short barrel. guess what, I was wrong. I use IMR4350, 44.0 grains. gun loves it. it shoots 3 shots into 1/2" to 3/4" consistently. some days even better. absolutely love it!

I've had three 6mm Rem's, all mine where 660's with 20" barrels. My best loads with 85 gr Sierra's and Speers was either 45.5 H414 or 47.0 H414, the 47 gr load is a little hot so, work up to it from 45.5. The loads in between didn't shoot very well. Wear good ear protection :)

It may be just a little too fast, but IMR 4831 shines in my 28" 1:12 twist 6mm Remmy with the 75 VMax and the 87s. Luck, Tim

H4895 as already mentioned works the best in my son's Model 7 .243 with exact same bullet, need a faster burning powder in the short barrels to get speed up.

Unless you're just hooked on the 85 grain bullet I would switch to the 100 grain when trying to get the most out of a short barrel.

+1 on Frank's post.

Don't know what all powders you may have on hand that are in the 4895, R-15, N135 burn rate range but that's a place to start. Your choice of bullet is fine. IMHO most versitile bullet made for 243 or a 6mm with the proper twist rate. Good luck & let us know how it turns out. :) WD

My Model 7 Remington has a 20 inch barrel and does best with IMR 4350 with the 85 Sierra BTHP which incidently I think is an outstanding all around bullet for the 243.

I got higher velocity with Varget but not near the accuracy that I can achieve with IMR 4350. I don't think the critter can tell the difference between plus or minus 100 f/s unless you miss it. So for me accuracy is my top priority.

Also have a 600 with the 18 1/2" bbl. Been shooting 100gr bullets with H414 for years and getting 2800fps. With 87 gr. I get 2990 fps. 85 gr. Sierra with H4895 gets right at 3000 fps and that one can go faster easily.

Now I'm putting my book away. Don't ask me if I'm using 41 gr. with the 100's and 44 gr. with the 87's. The 4895 is a couple grains less so that doesn't count.

That make any sense to you?
