6mm Rem: Any Superformance accuracy results?

I have a 1970s Rem 700 Varmint in 6mm Rem which has proven very accurate with 75 and 88-grain bullets. I am interested in adding 150-200 fps using Hodgdon's published Superformance data, however I am wondering how accurate this powder might be, in general and in 6mm Rem (and 243 Win) particularly. Any anecdotes or tips welcome.

Brian

The 42 g of Superperformance behind a 100 g BTHP Hornady out of my cheap Savage Axis .243 shoots 1/4 MOA at 400 yards. I have tried both IMR and H 4350 and 4831, but my gun likes the Superperformance best. My electric powder charge machine drops more consistent loads with the round, small powder of the Superperformance as opposed to the longer pellets in 4350 and 4831.

I shoot it in my .300 WSM too. It does best with a 150g bullet though.

Jimhoodag,

Thanks for the report. I have my first loads all ready to shoot, but decided to go hunting this weekend rather than shoot groups. We got into the first ground squirrels of the year and it was fun.

Incidentally, my hunting buddy and you both say "Superperformance" which I can't break him of. There's only one "per" in the name "Superformance". :o

I have tried it in a few rifles with no luck on accuracy. Speed wasnt that impressive either. IMR 4895 behind Sierra 75gr Varmint HP works the best for my 6mm Remmy.

But like everyone with experience will tell you...youll never know if your gun likes it til you try it.

If you want speed and accuracy in the 6mm rem go with R17. I am getting over 3000 fps with a 107 smk and 3/4" groups at 200 yards. It is good, try it.

I would - if I could get some. A few pounds of Superformance showed up at the LSGS, so I snapped up a bottle to try, and was lucky to get it. Last week the only powder they had in stock was 50 BMG.

What length barrel has your rifle?

I notice Hodgdon posts 3053 fps from Hybrid 100V behind a 107-gr bullet (from 24-in barrel.)

I need some R17 as well. The barrel on my rifle is a 27" douglas.

Then the velocity is not all that high. Accuracy is #1 for me, but with a 27" tube I wonder what velocity 4831 might produce?

(Hodgdon doesn't publish Superformance data for any bullet heavier than 80 grains in 6mm Rem.)

In a 24" barrel my 6mm launches the 75gr Sierras at 3470 fps and would probably do a little more if I pushed it. My twist won't allow anything higher than about a 87gr V-Max. Phots are just of initial 3 shot testing. It will print 5 shots into a similar group.

43gr IMR 4895

I didn't push it for speed or accuracy, but below is the one load I tried with RL-17 using the same bullet. Definitely gave me the speed. I just don't like messing with powders that start out throwing fliers AND horizontal stringing. However, I do use RL-17 in many other rifles with great success on speed and accuracy. In my experience, Hodgdon Superformance powder ALWAYS gives me a little slower speeds than what I can get with RL-17.

Well, I won't know until I try it myself. But Hodgdon shows Superformance producing the highest velocity of all Hodgdon/IMR/Win powders for every cartridge/bullet combo they publish Superformance data for - and by a wide margin over the next fastest powder. Of course they don't test Alliant powder, so it would be interesting to see a bullet maker's data for Superformance alongside the other powders like Alliant, Ramshot etc. but since Superformance has such limited application (according to Hodgdon anyway) I don't expect to see much independent data for it.

Yea in my area Superformance has been more available that most. Shot gun and pistol powder? Forget it ,I will say loaded amo seems to be recovering on the shelves. So hopefully when manufactures get caught up our componenets will be available? I am sure the big orderers get prefrence.

I have been looking for 6mm 70-gr TNT bullets, online and at the local big chain stores (Cabella's, Scheel's, and Sportsman's Warehouse - yep, we got 'em all in little ol' Reno.) 6mm varmint bullets of any kind are out of stock. (There are a few 100+ grain controlled expansion types on the shelves - i.e. the ones no one wants.)

Yesterday I thought I'd try ordering some from Sportsman's Warehouse, back ordered, but rather than pay for shipping, have them delivered to the local store for free. (I do have to pay sales tax of course.) They took the order, promised to e-mail me when they arrive at the store in "7-14 days". Really?

I love rural small town USA. I went into a store about a week ago and bought 400 Sierra 39gr 20 cal BK bullets. 200 Berger 6mm 105gr Target VLDs. 2000 Federal 210M Large Rifle Match primers. 1000 Federal 205 primers. And shelves are still stocked with all kinds of bullets, powder, and primers of all types. Easy pickins :)

And no...I will not tell anyone where my secret store is located cuz it will just end up like the rest of the stores out there in this frenzy of panicing fools ;)

But maybe you would consider procuring something for someone here (adding a handling fee for your trouble, of course)?

I have my own secret store, but it's in an adjacent state where I have family, so for powder I have to have someone coming my way drive it here, to make it economical, HazMat fees being what they are.

I have no problem picking stuff up for family and close friends. Just not going to make stocked stores public knowledge so the crazed hoarders try to buy it all out. I just buy a little here, and a little there at every store I go to so that there is enough left for everyone else and the shelves stay stocked. My personal shelves are packed full with all kinds of powder, primers and bullets for all my weapons. But that has been acquired over years of buying. Not from excessive and sudden hoarding.

My situation is quite similar although, when I built my 20VT, I had to suck it up for H4198 (8lbs) which should last me a long time.

Ohh...to the OP, I have some Superformance but haven't tried it but I did get good velocity out of Hybrid 100-V and Reloader 19. Need to test H4831SC too.

87 VMAX: 3400 Hybrid

105 AMAX: 3200 Hybrid

107 SMK: 3000 RL-19

None had pressure signs and all shot .25 MOA or less @ 200 yards.

RP-Brass
R 91/2M
Krieger 5R 1-8 trist
26" long

Tried some Superformance in my Rem 700 in 6mm and didn't care for it. Rifle will normally shoot .580" to .600" five shot groups with 70 gr. bullets with some powders. The best out of my rifle with this powder was .900" five shot groups. Hopefully your rifle will like it better. I don't check the vel. on loads until I find the accuracy I like.

Well, in one week flat the 70-gr TNTs I ordered from Sportsman's Warehouse arrived at my local store for pickup.
