6mm Question

Ive been debating on building a 243 running 115 dtacs on a savage target action as a repeater as Ive been around the 243 a fair bit and would like a 1000 yard gun. Recently a freind suggested running the 6mm or 6mm AI instead because of the increased throat life. My question is, will the 6mm with 115 dtacs be too long for a savage repeater? I think they are, but I thought I would ask the experts.

I am about to receive a 1-in-8 McLennon 6AI barrel on a short, stiff 722 action for the 1000 yard F Class stuff this summer. Shot a Savage .243 last summer but want more velocity. Will be shooting 115 Bergers. In this type of slow fire competition the rifle will be set up as a single shot, no magazine. A fired case will flip clear when ejected. An unfired cartridge will probably have to be pulled out the rear of the action with the bolt. I take the bolt stop out anyway to make it quick and easy to walk off the firing line with the bolt out. So I guess it depends how badly you want a magazine-fed rifle as to whether or not you would build a 6AI rifle on a short action.

If you want to stick with the shorter 243 case and still get any theoretical advantage,s) connected with a sharper shoulder, why not go with a 243 AI?

Honestly, after shooting 115s at well over 3000fps out of several 6x47s & a 6XC, I don't see the need for any more powder capacity or velocity at 1000. IMHO, better efficiency goes hand-in-hand with better accuracy, and if barrel life is any consideration, either one of these cartridges is considerably better than either the 243 AI or 6mm AI.

I think the advantage of a larger case is the use of slower, cooler powder, e.g. H1000 which may give you longer barrel life.

Thanks for the help guys. I had no idea the 6 x 47 could push the 115's to 3000, you may have just made my mind up.
